GENESIS Author : Moses (Lk 16:29,31 & 24:27,44, Jn 1:17,45 & 7:19 and II Cor 3:15) (See also - Exo24:4,7 and Deut 31:9,24-26) Theme : Beginnings Book’s Main Character : Abraham (Gen 11-25) (Abraham is referred to 94 times in the New Testament) About the Author : Moses, whose name means, “to draw out,” was born into slavery in Egypt c. 1568 BC. He was born approximately sixty-four years after Joseph’s death (1632 BC). Moses’ first forty years were spent training in Pharaoh’s Court. His second forty years were spent tending sheep in the wilderness of Midian. And his third and last forty years were spent teaching God’s people His ways on the way to Canaan (called the Promised Land). Moses died right before the children of Israel entered Canaan ( Deut 34:5 - 1448 BC). About the Book : “ Genesis ” means beginning, and the book of Genesis records for us the beginning of many different events, such as: Heaven and Earth (Gen 1); Human Race (Gen 2); Sin and Death (Gen 2:17); Salvation through CHRIST , Everlasting Life (Gen 3:15) and the Hebrew Race (Gen 12-50). The first eleven chapters of Genesis record for us the first 2,083 years of man’s history (from 4000-1917 BC). During that time, four major events took place: Creation (Gen 1); the Fall of Man (Gen 3); the Flood (Gen 7,8); and the Tower of Babel (Gen 11). The remaining thirty-nine chapters of Genesis (Gen 12-50) cover 285 years (from 1917-1632 BC) and revolve around four men: Abraham (Gen 11-25); Isaac (Gen 21-35); Jacob (Gen 25-49); and Joseph (Gen 30-50). The book of Genesis covers a span of 2,368 years (from 4000-1632 BC). Notes of Interest : 1. Genesis is quoted in the NT 27 times. 10 of those 27 quotes refer directly to CHRIST . 2. Prophecies are referred to 107 times. 3. Prophecies concerning CHRIST are referred to 35 of those 107 times. 4. CHRIST appeared in a preincarnate physical form 4 different times (Gen 14:18, 16:7, 18:1, 32:24). 5. CHRIST appeared personally on 4 different occasions (Gen 21:17-18 & 22:11-18 & 28:13-16 & 31:11-13). 6. There are 42 inset maps used in the book of Genesis .
