1 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 2 If a soul sin , and commit a trespass against the LORD , and 5 lie unto his neigh- bour in that 6 which was delivered him to keep , or in fellowship , or in a thing taken away by violence , or hath deceived his neighbour ; 3 7 Or have found that which was lost , and lieth concerning it , and sweareth falsely ; in any of all these that a man do- eth , sinning therein : 4 Then it shall be , because he hath sinned , and is guilty , that he shall restore that which he took violently away , or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten , or that which was delivered him to keep , or the lost thing which he found , 5 Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely ; he shall even restore it in the princi- pal , and shall add the 8 fifth part more there- to , and give it unto him to whom it apper- taineth , in the day of his trespass offering . 6 And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD , a ram without blemish out of the flock , with thy estimation , for a trespass offering , unto the priest : 7 And the priest shall make an atone- ment for him before the LORD : and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein . 8 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 9 Command Aaron and his sons , saying , This is the 9 law of the burnt offering : It is the burnt offering , because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning , and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it . 10 And the priest shall put on his linen garment , and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh , and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar , and he shall put them beside the altar . 11 And he shall put off his garments , and put on other garments , and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place .
12 Then shall he bring it to the priest , and the priest shall take his handful of it , even a memorial thereof , and burn it on the al- tar , according to the offerings made by fire unto the LORD : it is a sin offering . 13 And the priest shall make an atone- ment for him as touching his sin that he hath sinned in one of these , and it shall be forgiven him : and the remnant shall be the priest’s , as a meat offering . The trespass offering (Picturing CHRIST as our “atoning” sin [damage] substitute -Gal 3:13 & Rom 8:1-3 & Isa 53:10a ) Date - Apr 1st, 1486 BC/AM 2514 14 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 15 1 If a soul commit a trespass , and sin through ignorance , in the holy things of the LORD ; 2 then he shall bring for his tres- pass unto the LORD a ram without blem- ish out of the flocks , 3 with thy estimation by shekels of silver , after the shekel of the sanctuary , for a trespass offering : 16 And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing , and shall add the fifth part thereto , and give it unto the priest : and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering , and it shall be forgiven him . 17 And if a soul sin , and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD ; though he wist it not , 4 yet is he guilty , and shall bear his iniquity . 18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock , with thy estima- tion , for a trespass offering , unto the priest : and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not , and it shall be for- given him . 19 It is a trespass offering : he hath certainly trespassed against the LORD . Leviticus 6 A review of the offerings Date - Apr 1st, 1486 BC/AM 2514

3. that is, “with what- ever one thinks it is worth in terms of money” 4. Rom 2:12-16 5. Prov 24:28 6. Exo 22:7-10 7. Exo 23:4 & Deut 22:1-4 8. or, “20% more” - Lk 19: 1- 8 9. Exo 29:38-42 & Num 28:3-10 & Lev 1
5:15,17-18 Whereas the sin offering dealt with “ known” sins (sins that have been revealed to the perpetrator - Lev 4:2 & 5:2-4 ), the trespass offering dealt with “ unknown” sins (sins that were committed due to oversight and omission – though he wist it not ). Both offerings are described in Hebrews ( Heb 12:1 ). 5:16 The trespass offering also differed from the sin offering in that it was to be preceded by a 20% (equal to a “double tithe”) penalty ( and shall add the fifth part thereto ). Why? Because God was trying to teach His people that “unknown” sins hurt us more than we think. Lest our ignorance hurt us too badly, it is always wise to give God an extra 10% every now and then (that is how we would offer the trespass offering today) to remind ourselves to beg God to reveal to us “unknown” sins. THE ADAGE IS TRUE: What you don’t know can hurt you 6:4-5 God never intended for people who commit crimes (that is, crimes not worthy of capital punishment – Rom 13: 1- 4 ) to do “jail” time ( Exo 22:1 , Lev 24:10-12-23, Num 5: 6- 7 , Deut 25: 1- 2 and Lk 19: 1- 8 ). God expected people who committed crimes to “restore” the damage they did to others by working it off ( he shall restore ). Only repeat offenders (people who commit crimes habitually) were put to death in order to rid society of their criminal ways (Exo 21:28-29 and Deut 17:12-13).
