III JOHN 

2131

7 Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, 1 taking nothing of the 2 Gen- tiles. 8 3 We therefore ought to receive such, that we might be fellow helpers to the truth. John cautions Gaius to beware of Diotrephes 9 I wrote unto the church: but Diotrephes, who loveth to have the 4 pre- eminence among them, receiveth us not. 10 Wherefore, if I come, I will remem- ber his deeds which he doeth, 5 prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he him- self receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of

the church . 11 Beloved, 6 follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. 7 He that do- eth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God. John praises Demetrius 12 Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; 8 and ye know that our record is true. 13 9 I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee: 14 But I trust I shall shortly see thee, and we shall speak face to face. Peace be to thee. Our friends salute thee. Greet the friends by name.

1:12 This phrase ( hath good report ) is the Greek word PHPDUτXUKτDL ( memarturetai ) and means “ one who bears witness by his death .” Demetrius was the kind of believer who was willing to die (become a martyr) for the truth. Not everyone who says they love the truth is willing to die for it. READ NEXT - Revelation 1-22
