I JOHN 5:7

I JOHN 5:21

14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, what- soever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him. The “sin” Christians should hate to commit 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, 10 and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. 11 There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it. 17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death. 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God 12 keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not. 19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness. 20 And we know that the Son of God is come, 13 and hath given us an understand- ing, that we may know 14 HIM that is true, and we are in HIM that is true, even in HIS Son Jesus Christ. This is the 15 true GOD , and eternal life. 21 Little children, 16 keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

7 For there are three [ TR INI TY ] that bear record in heaven, the FATHER , the 1 WORD , and the HOLY GHOST : and these three are 2 one. 8 And there are three that 3 bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one. 9 If we receive 4 the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: 5 for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son. 10 He that believeth on the Son of God 6 hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. 11 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He that hath the 7 Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. Why do Christians doubt their salvation? #3) They fail to dwell on the deity of JESUS CHRIST 13 8 These things have I written unto you 9 that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

5:7-8 This portion of Scripture (from in heaven to in earth ) only occurs in two modern Greek manuscripts, modern copies of the Vulgate, and is quoted by a few African Fathers. However, not a single Greek manuscript or church lesson-book before the fifteenth century has any trace of this passage. It is even omitted in the best copies of the Vulgate (St. Jerome’s Revised Bible). J. Paterson Smyth in How We Got our Bible notes:

Erasmus (from whom we received the Majority Text, the Textus Receptus – my emphasis ), not finding the words in any Greek manuscript, omitted them from the first two editions of his Greek Testament, which was chiefly the authority that our translators used. But as they had long stood in the Latin Vulgate, an outcry was at once raised that he was tampering with the Bible. He insisted that no Greek manuscript contained the passage; “and,” said he at last, when they pressed him, “if you can show me even a single one in which they occur, I will insert them in the future.” Unfortunately they did find one, the manuscript of Montfort, which is now in the library of Trinity College, Dublin, but is evidently no older than about the fifteenth century. The words had got into it probably from some corrupt Latin manuscript; and on this slight authority Erasmus admitted them into his text. 1

NOTE –This appears to be one of the few “flaws” found within the beloved KJV ( Lk 3:36 , Acts 7:45 , Mk 16:9-20 , Mt 7:22 , Rom 16:25b,26 , Rev 9:16 , and Isa 21:8 & 44:8b ). Those of the Revised Bible (1880 - NT and 1885 - OT), who spent ten years and seven revisions before producing their work, omitted this passage from the newer versions. While it is true that this author favors the King James Version (even with its few “flaws” due to the translators), it is also true that other versions (though translated from “less favorable” Greek texts, Alexandrian text) should be studied along with the KJV. 5:13 a There are two reasons why people need to “rethink” the deity of CHRIST ( that believe on the name of the Son of God ): 1. Dwelling on the deity of CHRIST is a necessary part to salvation (Jn 8:24) God tells us that there are two areas in which we must repent if we are to be saved: (1) we must change our minds (repent) as to who we are (Lk 5:31-32 & 13:1-5 and Mt 27:3 ) -we are “sinfully” sick and in need of the Savior because we cannot save ourselves (Rom 3:10,23); and (2) we must change our minds (repent) as to who CHRIST is (Mt 4:13-17 & 11:20-24, Mk 1:15, Acts 3:12-19 and Acts 2:38) -He is God (Jn 8:58-59), and thus our only Savior from sin(Acts 4:10-12). Like the thief on the cross who was promised everlasting life (Lk 23:43) after he recognized Christ’s deity by referring to Him as “Lord” (Lk 23:42), we too must recognized His deity if we are to be saved (Jn 8:24). 2. Dwelling on the deity of CHRIST is a necessary part to our sanctification (Intro to I John –under About the Book ) Believers who fail to dwell on the deity of Christ ( that believe on the name of the Son of God ) offend the Spirit of God who testifies to Christ’s deity (Jn 15:26). Offending the Spirit of God in turn leads to quieting His voice within us (Rom 8:16 and I Jn 4:13), for it is He who’s job it is to assure us of our salvation ( that ye may know that ye have eternal life ). Thus, not only is
