he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And 6 this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. I John 5 Faith that overcomes the world Date Written - c. AD 90 1 7 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the 8 CHRIST is 9 born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the chil- dren of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, 10 that we keep his commandments: and his com- mandments are not grievous. 4 For whatsoever is born of God 11 over- cometh the world: and this is the victory that 12 overcometh the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that 13 JESUS is the 14 SON OF GOD ?

13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, 1 because he hath given us of his SPIRIT . 14 And we have seen and do testify that the FATHER sent the SON to be the Saviour of the world. 15 2 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. The promise of rewards to all who are found faithful when CHRIST returns (Fulfilled - Rev 4:2) 17 Herein is our love made 3 perfect, that we may have boldness in the 4 DAY OF JUDGMENT : because as he is, so are we in this world. P 18 There is no fear in love; but 3 perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because 5 he first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can

6 This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the 15 SPIRIT is truth. 4:16 There are three divine expressions that are used within Scripture to convey the intellectual, moral, and metaphysical (or, supernatural) essence of God: 1. light ( I Jn 1:5 ) 2. love (I Jn 4:7,16 & Rom 5:8 & 8:39) 3. spirit ( Jn 4:24 ) The term “ love” expresses the moral part of the essence of God (meaning, God has moral attributes that you and I, as fallen free- willed creatures, do not – Rom 1:20b – point #5) and is used to describe the moral nature of all three persons of the Triune Godhead: * FATHER - Jn 3:16 NOTE – The statement “God is love” (ο θH ος D γ DS η Hσ τ LQ ) is simply not true. God is not an abstraction. God is a person. The word “love” ( D γ DS η) is without the definite article. The presence of the article in Greek identifies, its absence qualifies. Here its absence emphasizes quality, nature, essence. The statement should read: “God as to His nature is love.” 4:19 Our motive for why we do what we do ought to be based on God’s love for us ( because he first loved us ), not our love for God ( I Sam 15:15 , Mt 6:1 & 20:1,11 , I Cor 3:13b , II Cor 5:14 , Jude 1:21 and Rev 2:4 ). 5:1 Notice, in order to be birthed ( born of God ) into the family of God, a person must understand the significance (facts) behind the actual death, burial, and resurrection of Christ, and then accept those facts by faith (Rom 10:9-13). Anyone who accepts the “facts” of the Gospel can be saved ( I Cor 15:1 ). The “facts” of the Gospel are: 1. Christ died for our sins (I Cor 15:3) Man cannot save himself via his own sacrifices (good works - Titus 3:5). According to the Bible, there is only ONE who died for the sins of mankind and can thus save him (Mt 1:21, Lk 2:11, Acts 4:12, Titus 2:13 and Isa 45:21 & 49:26). Thus any religion that teaches you that you have to be good in order to gain Heaven, that is, your sacrifice and toil is what gains you eternal life, does not accept the “facts” behind the Gospel. 2. Christ was buried (I Cor 15:4) The reason man cannot save himself via his own sacrifice is because man is not capable of paying for his own sins. According to Hebrews 9:24-28, whereas man had to continually offer animal sacrifices in order to receive temporal forgiveness, Jesus died and was buried “once” for sin, having obtained eternal redemption for us (Heb 9:11-12). Thus any religion that teaches you that your good works (karma, nirvana, etc.) pay for your entrance into a better afterlife does not accept the “facts” behind the Gospel. * SON - Jn 15:9-13, Rom 8:35, II Cor 5:14 and Eph 3:19 * HOLY SPIRIT - Rom 15:30, II Cor 6:6 and Gal 5:22
