I JOHN 2:19

8 If we say that we have no 1 sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. Restored fellowship 9 2 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, 3 and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. I John 2 CHRIST - Our advocate Date Written - c. AD 90 1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an 4 ADVOCATE with the Father, Jesus Christ the 5 righteous: 2 And he is the 6 PROPITIATION for our sins: and not for ours only, 7 but also for the sins of the whole world. Why do Christians doubt their salvation? #1) They fail to keep God’s commandments 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, 8 in him verily is the love of God 9 perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 7 Brethren, 10 I write no new command- ment unto you, 11 but an old command- ment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. 8 Again, 12 a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in 13 darkness even until now.

10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. 12 I write unto you, 14 little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake. 13 I write unto you, 15 fathers, because ye have known 16 him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, 17 young men, because ye have overcome the 18 wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the 19 Father. 14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because 20 ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one. 15 21 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. 22 If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the 23 lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 24 And theworldpasseth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the 25 will of God abideth for ever. P The promise of an Antichrist (Fulfilled - Rev 6:1,2 & 13:1-6) 18 26 Little children, it is the 27 last time: and as ye have heard that 28 antichrist shall come, even now are there 29 many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. P 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, 30 that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

1:8 The Bible is clear. Those who believe in sinless perfection “deceive themselves.” Christians can, yea, will sin (II Tim 4:10). According to the Bible (Rom 7:15-25 and Gal 5:16-17 ), every believer has two natures: (1) the one he was born with , i.e, “old nature” (that’s why “doing well” doesn’t come naturally - Isa 1:17 ); and (2) the one he was born again with , i.e., “new nature” (which is created by the SPIRIT OF GOD ). Depending on which nature the Christian yields to will determine whether or not he/she sins. Those not wanting to “deceive themselves” must learn to give their minds to God on a daily basis (Rom 8:5-8 & 12:1-2, II Cor 4:16, Eph 4:22-24 and Colo 3:9-10). God’s Word teaches against sinless perfection ( Mt 5:48 ). 1:9 a This word ( confess ) is the Greek word ‘ οPοOοJZPHQ ( homologomen ) and means “ to agree with .” As believers, whenever we sin, we are to “agree with” God’s Word and listen to the convicting power and voice of the HOLY SPIRIT within us. Then, we need to ask God for forgiveness ( II Cor 3:18 ). That’s what repentance is. It’s agreeing with God as to what is right and what is wrong, and then confessing it ( Jonah 3:5 , Mt 3:2 & 27:3 , Lk 23:34 , Acts 2:38 , II Cor 7:10 and I Thess 1:9 ). Kenneth S.
