be made an high priest; but HE that said unto him, 12 Thou art my SON , to day have I begotten THEE . 6 As HE saith also in another place, 13 THOU art a 13 THOU for ever after the order of MELCHISEDEC . 7 Who in the days of his flesh, when 14 HE had offered up prayers and supplications 15 with strong crying and tears unto HIM that was able to save him from 16 death, and was heard in that he feared; 8 Though he were a SON , yet learned he 17 obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 18 And being made perfect, he became the 19 AUTHOR OF ETERNAL 20 SALVATION salvation unto all them that obey him; 10 Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. 11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12 For when for the time ye ought to be 21 teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the 22 oracles of God; and are become 23 such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13 For every one that useth milk is un- skilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by 24 rea- son of use have their senses 25 exercised to discern both good and evil. 11 1 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. 12 For the word of God is 2 quick, and 3 powerful, and sharper than any 4 twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 5 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the 6 SON OF GOD , let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an 7 HIGH PRIEST which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; 8 but was in all points tempted like as we are, 9 yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. 1 Therefore leaving the 26 principles of the doctrine of Christ, 27 let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 5:7 Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane to be saved from an unscriptural death at the hands of the Roman soldiers (Mt 26:36-46). Jesus did not fear death (Lk 9:51-53) or the cross (Heb 12:2), only an untimely death. 5:8 The English reads: Though he were a son . However, the Greek reads: NDLSHU ZQ XLο9 ( though being son ). You will notice that the Greek rendering has no definite article ( the ) before the word son . This is why the translators placed the indefinite article ( a ) before the word son . Because the Greek language has no indefinite article ( a ) as the English has, and the rule of translation is to include the indefinite article ( a ) where the context allows or requires it if the English reader would not understand its absence in the translation, the translators added the indefinite article ( a ) here in hopes of rendering a better translation of the verse. They failed. The present English translation ( Though he were a son ) makes it sound as if Jesus was but a mere human child (son) of Mary. He was not. Seeing that the absence of an article within the Greek “qualifies (shows nature)” the noun, the opening phrase ( Though he were a son ) should have been rendered: Though He was Son of God by nature (thus God the Son). Point being: In spite of the fact that
