II TIMOTHY 2:9

testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of GOD ; 9 1 WHO hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, 2 not according to our works, 3 but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus 4 before the world began, 10 But is now made manifest by the 5 appearing of our SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST , 6 who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel: 11 Whereunto I am 7 appointed a 8 preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. The promise of CHRIST’S return (Rapture) (Fulfilled - Rev 4:1) 12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I 9 know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that 10 DAY . P A good pastor will learn to guard the Gospel by depending totally on the HOLY SPIRIT 13 Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 14 That 11 GOOD THING which was committed unto thee 12 keep by the 13 HOLY GHOST which dwelleth in us. 15 This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. 16 The Lord give mercy unto the house of 14 Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: 17 But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. 18 The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that 10 DAY : and
in howmany things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well. P II Timothy 2 A good pastor will learn to commit himself and fulfill his duty as a son, a soldier, a sportsperson, and a seed-planter Date Written - c. AD 67 1) A good pastor (like a son) will commit himself to remaining strong (vs 1); 2) Teaching the next generation (vs 2) 1 Thou therefore, 15 my son, 16 be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to 17 faithful men, who shall be able to 18 teach others also. 3) A good pastor (like a soldier) will commit himself to suffering hardness (vs 3); 4) Disciplining himself (vs 4) 3 Thou therefore endure hardness, 19 as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. 5) A good pastor (like a sportsperson) will commit himself to staying within the boundaries of the game (vs 5) 5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive 20 lawfully. 6) A good pastor (like a seed-planter) will commit himself to toiling (hard work) (vs 6) 6 The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits. 7 Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. 8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the 21 SEED OF DAVID was 22 raised from the dead according to my gospel: 9 Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evildoer, even unto bonds; 23 but the word of God is not bound.

1:10 Eternal life and immortality only come one way – through the Gospel (Rom 1:16, Eph 1:13 and I Cor 15:1-4). 1:11 Surprisingly, “teaching” was not one of Paul’s better gifts (II Cor 10:10 & 11:6). 1:12 This word ( keep ) is the Greek word MXOD[DL ( phulaxai ) and means “ to guard; to walk sentry .” Paul had absolute assurance that God would “ guard ” his salvation until Christ returned. Paul understood the doctrine of eternal security and believed once saved, always saved ( Psa 37:28 , Jn 10:28-29 , Phil 1:6 , Eph 1:13-14 & 4:30 and I Pet 4:19). We should have the same trust (I Jn 5:13). 1:18 This is the only verse in the NT that even appears to refer to a “prayer for the dead” ( The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that DAY ). The only other reference to a “prayer for the dead” is found in the extra-biblical books of the bible ( Tobit 12:12 and 2 Maccabees 12:39-45 – Lk 11:51 ). 2:2a Nobody can influence everybody (Jn 6:66), so influence ( commit thou ) who you can. 2:2b One of the surest ways to guard the Gospel (vs 14) is to “train others to teach others ” (Mt 4:19 and Lk 14:26c ). 2:4 Every good pastor will have a “militant side” ( warreth ) to him. Nevertheless, he must learn to contend for the faith without becoming contentious (Eph 4:14-15 and Jude 1:3). 2:5 Every good pastor is expected to strive lawfully (according to the rules; the requirements for being a pastor - I Tim 3:1-7), if he is to enjoy the Heaven he is headed to ( II Cor 5:10-11 ).
