I TIMOTHY “MINI” SERIES The Work Of A Good Pastor

I. A good pastor will learn to contend for the simplicity of the Gospel (1:1-20) Lesson #1. He will study the Gospel, not tales (Acts 17) Lesson #2. He will stand for the truth of the Gospel, and not waver (Gal 1:1-10) II. A good pastor will exhort believers to pray for all men in order that the Gospel may go forth unhindered (2:1-8) Lesson #3. He will stay on his knees for the sake of the Gospel, not faint (Lk 18:1-8) III. A good pastor will encourage Christian women to be sober-minded, silent, and submissive (2:9-15) Lesson #4. He will steer Christian women to focus on their inner beauty (spiritual character), not their outer beauty (Titus 2:3-5) IV. A good pastor will fulfill the qualifications of his office (3:1-16) Lesson #5. He will study the qualifications of his calling: 1. Blameless (irreproachable; not open to censure or scandal - Prov 6:32,33) 2. Not divorced Note - The original Greek reads “a one-woman man” 3. Vigilant (self-controlled) 4. Sober (sober-minded) 5. Of good behavior 6. Given to hospitality 7. Apt to teach 8. Not given to wine (not a drinker of alcohol lest he get drunk and ruin his testimony) 9. No striker (fighter) 10. Not greedy of filthy lucre (not fond of dishonest financial matters; not a Judas) 11. Patient 12. Not a brawler (not argumentative) 13. Not covetous (dead to the wealth of this world) 14. Ruleth well his own house (wife and children under control) 15. Not a novice (a new Christian; a beginner) 16. A good report of them which are without (a good name before the secular world) Lesson #6. He will stress the qualifications of a deacon: 1. Must be saved (Acts 6:3) 2. Grave (worthy of respect; of honest report - I Tim 3:8 and Acts 6:3) 3. Not double-tongued (two-faced - I Tim 3:8) 4. Not given to much wine (character enough to abstain from all appearances of evil - I Tim 3:8 and I Thess 5:22)

5. Not greedy of filthy lucre (not a Judas; not dishonest in financial matters - I Tim 3:8) 6. Holding the mystery of the faith (a witness for Christ - I Tim 3:9 and Acts 6:4-7) 7. Servant (I Tim 3:10 and Acts 6:1-3) 8. Blameless (above reproach; not open to censure or scandal - I Tim 3:10 and Prov 6:32-33) 9. Have a qualified wife (she’s to be grave, sober-minded and faithful, not a gossip - I Tim 3:11) 10. A man (the Bible clearly limits the office of deacon to men - I Tim 3:12 and Acts 6:3) 11. Not divorced (the original Greek reads “ a one-woman man ” - I Tim 3:12) 12. Ruleth well his own house (his wife and children under control - I Tim 3:12) 13. Not prejudiced (he must dispel prejudices by promoting harmony - Acts 6:1)

14. SPIRIT -filled (Word-filled - Acts 6:3 and Prov 1:23) 15. Wise (a student of the Bible - Acts 6:3 and Prov 2:1-6) 16. Orderly (he must be able to conduct business - Acts 6:3) 17. Full of faith (totally dependent upon God’s Word - Acts 6:5) V. A good pastor will warn believers to beware of false teachers and false doctrines (4:1-6) Lesson #7.
