thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. 13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine. 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the 6 presbytery. 15 Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all. 16 7 Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both 8 save thyself, and them that hear thee. I Timothy 5 A good pastor will teach believers to respect the elderly, widows, and pastors Date Written - c. AD 64 1 9 Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren; 2 The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. The proper care of widows 3 10 Honour widows that are widows indeed. 4 But if any widow have children or 11 nephews, let them learn first to shew 12 piety at home, and to 13 requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. 5 Now she that is a widow indeed, 14 and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. 6 But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth. 7 And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. 8 But if 15 any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an 16 infidel.

I Timothy 4 A good pastor will warn believers to beware of false teachers and doctrines Date Written - c. AD 64 1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; 1 having their conscience seared with a hot iron; 3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 4 For 2 every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be re- ceived with thanksgiving: 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer. 6 *G UIPV QVU UIF CSFUIFSO JO remem brance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. A good pastor will “work hard” at becoming an example of personal godliness 7 But refuse profane and old wives’ 3 fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness. 8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, 4 having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of 5 all men, specially of those that believe. 11 These things command and teach. 12 Let no man despise thy youth; but be

4:1a This word ( depart ) is the Greek word DSοστ η σοQτDL ( apostesontai ), from which we derive our English word “ apostasy .” According to Paul, in the latter times (during the lasts days, right before the return of Christ), there shall be a “defection from the faith” throughout Christendom. Meaning: In the end people are going to choose religiosity (vs 2-3) over a relationship with God (vs 10). As overwhelming lawlessness floods the earth, Jesus asks the rethorical question, “… when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth ?” The implied answer is “no,” not even among those who claim to be saved ( Lk 18:8 ). NOTE - Godliness, which is the result of a relationship with God, guarantees a believer a profitable time here ( having promise of the life that now is – vs 8) and hereafter ( and of that which is to come – vs 8). Paul said to young Pastor Timothy, “We work hard at living right because we study one doctrine above all doctrines –we study the doctrine of Christ” (Lk 24:13-27-32). Those who choose to finish what they started the day they got saved will study the doctrine of Christ ( For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men , specially of those that believe – vs 10). 4:1b This word ( doctrines ) is the Greek word GLGDσNDOLDL ς ( didaskaliais ) and means “ teaching, instruction ” (Mt 15:9 and Mk 7:7). Nineteen of the twenty-one occurrences of this word in the NT are found in Paul’s writings: four in Paul’s non-pastoral epistles (Rom 12:7 & 15:4, Eph 4:14 and Colo 2:22) and fifteen in Paul’s Pastoral epistles (I Tim 1:10 & 4:1,6,13,16 & 5:17 & 6:1,3, II Tim
