Written From Macedonia During Paul’s Release From House Arrest In Rome 7 Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm. 8 But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully; 9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for mur- derers of fathers andmurderers of mothers, for manslayers, 10 For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine; 11 According to the glorious 1 gospel of the 2 BLESSED GOD , which was committed to my trust. 12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, 3 putting me into the ministry; 13 4 Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that 5 CHRIST JESUS came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on 6 HIM to life everlasting. 17 Now unto the KING 7 ETERNAL , 8 im- mortal, invisible, the only 9 wise GOD , be honour and 10 glory for ever and ever. AMEN.

I TIMOTHY 1:7 - 2:8

18 This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; 19 11 Holding faith, andagoodconscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: 20 Of whom is 12 Hymenaeus and 13 Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme. I Timothy 2 A good pastor will exhort believers to pray for all men in order that the Gospel may go forth unhindered Date Written - c. AD 64 1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and 14 giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2 For kings, and for all that are in 15 authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of 16 GOD OUR SAVIOUR ; 4 Who will have 17 all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is 18 one God, and one 19 MEDIATOR between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 20 WHO gave himself a ransom for 17 all, to be testified in due time. 7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

8 I will therefore that men pray every- where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. 1:7 Paul here charges Timothy to guard against teachers who mingle fables and endless genealogies with the true Gospel. As Christians, we are exhorted to beware of teachers who promote questions and doubts, rather than godliness. 1:8 Unfortunately, many of the Jews used the law as a cover to the malicious opposition they made to the Gospel. According to the Bible, the law is good if used as a deterrent to evil (Rom 13:1-4) or to expose sinners in order that they might see their need for Christ (Gal 3:21-24 and Rom 3:19-20 & 5:20). Once saved though, the law should apply to the believer in such a way as to better his life, not burden it (Acts 15:28-29). We who are made righteous through Christ are under grace, not the law (Gal 2:21 & 3:10-13). 1:10a This word ( defile themselves with mankind ) is the Greek word DUσHQοNοLτDL ς ( arsenokoitais ). It is a Greek term Paul developed directly from the Septuagint that specifically refers to homosexuality, not prostitution. It is the same word used in I Corinthians 6:9 to describe “ abusers of themselves with mankind .” Joe Dallas in The Gay Gospel notes:

Thankfully, the Scripture issue has been examined, with admirable scholarship and clarity, in two books I highly recommend: Straight and Narrow ? By Thomas Schmidt (InterVarsity Press, 1995) and The Bible and Homosexual practices : Texts and Hermeneutics by Robert Gagnon (Abingdon Press, 2002)…Anyone interested in a more comprehensive analysis should refer to these. 1
