Mt 14:22-33 - Christ walks on the water on the Sea of Galilee 5. Mt 21:18-20 - Christ curses the fig tree near Jerusalem 6. Mk 8:1-9 - Christ feeds the 4,000 NOTE - There were two miracles of nature performed by God among the Jews. They are as follows: 1. Acts 16:22-34 - An earthquake in Philippi 2. Acts 5:19 - Peter is released from jail by an angel in Jerusalem The gift of “tongues” is first mentioned in the New Testament inMark 16:17. The key to understanding “tongues” is knowing the use of the word “new” before the word “tongues.” According to the New Testament, there are six different Greek words that are translated “ new :” 1. Neos - meaning, “brand new” (Colo 3:10) 2. Kainos - meaning, “not brand new, but rather new to the ones who are about to put it into use” (Jn 13:34) The Greek word that is used for the word “ new ” in Mark 16:17 is the word kai/nos (meaning, “ not brand new, but rather new to the ones who are about to put it into use ). This means that these new languages (tongues), that the disciples were promised to speak, would not be some brand new heavenly angelic language that had never been spoken before by men here on earth. Rather, these new languages would be old, known, established, earthly languages (such as, Parthian, Median, Elamian, etc. - Acts 2:8-11) that were new ( kai/nos ) to the disciples who were about to speak them. For example, Jesus said in John 13:34, “A new ( kai/nos ) commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another...” We know according to Leviticus 19:18 that loving one another was not a new commandment. Rather it became new to the disciples who were about to put it into practice. In Mk 2:22, the bottle is referred to as being a “ new ” ( kai/nos ) bottle. Yet, according to it’s usage, the bottle was not a brand new bottle, only a bottle that could contain brand new (ne/os) wine. The bottle (although not brand new) became new in its usage because of the brand new (ne/os) wine that was put into it. It was not the bottle that was new, but it’s use! The sign gift “tongues” was fulfilled and performed only one time in all of the New Testament (Acts 2:1-11). Interestingly enough, according to the New Testament, there are also three different Greek words that are translated “ tongue :” 1. Dialektos - used 6 times in the New Testament In every case the use of this word “ tongues ” is clearly understood to be a known, established, earthly language (Acts 1:19 & 2:6,8 & 21:40 & 22:2 & 26:14). 2. Glossa - used 50 times in the New Testament In every case the use of this word “ tongues ” is either speaking of: * The physical tongue (Mk 7:33,35 & Lk 1:64 & 16:24 & Acts 2:3,26 & Rom 3:13 & 14:11 & I Cor 14:9 & Phil 2:11 & Jms 1:26 & 3:5,6,6,8 & I Pet 3:10 & I Jn 3:18 & Rev 16:10) 3. Prospatos - meaning, “at this time” (Heb 10:20) 4. Gluekos - meaning, “sweet or fresh” (Acts 2:13) 5. Noomeni - translated, “new moon” (Colo 2:16) 6. Agnaphos - meaning, “virgin-new” (Mt 9:16 & Mk 2:21)
