Written From Corinth During Paul’s Third Missionary Journey ROMANS 13:2 - 14:4 Although previous scholars interpreted the name Junia as masculine, church fathers, including Origen, John Chrysostom, and Jerome, identified her as a woman. Further, while the hypothetical male name Junias is unattested in ancient inscriptions, the female Latin name Junia occurs over 250 times in Greek and Latin inscriptions found in Rome alone. Therefore scholars today generally interpret the name as feminine – Bernadette J. Brooten. 1 16:25 a The “ revelation of the mystery ” Paul speaks of here has nothing to do with salvation. Rather it is speaking of Gentile believers being fellow heirs with believing Jews in order that they might work together for God in the proclamation of the salvation message ( Eph 3:3-6 ). 16:25 b Although the New International Version (NIV) comes from a “less favorable” Greek text than does the King James Version ( Acts 7:45 and Heb 10:39 ), still, the NIV translates this verse better than does the KJV. Note how the original Greek reads concerning the last half of this verse: “… NDτD DSοNDOX\LQ PXστKULοX FUοQοL9 DLZQLοL9 σHσLJKPHQοX ,” “…according to a revelation of [the] mystery, in times of the ages (eternal) having been kept secret,” Whereas the King James Version reads, “… according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began ,” the New International Version corrects the translation to read, “… according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past (i.e., eternity past )” Whereas the KJV mistranslates the Greek word DLZQLο9 ( since the world began - II Tim 1:9 and Titus 1:2), making it sound as if the revelation of the mystery (i.e., believing Jews and Gentiles working together for God) was something kept secret only since the creation of the world 6,000 years ago, the NIV properly translates the Greek word DLZQLο9 ( for long ages past ), making it known that the revelation of the mystery (i.e., believing Jews and Gentiles working together for God) was something God knew about for all eternity past. It’s obvious that the Triune Godhead knew from eternity past (not just 6,000 years ago) that believing Jews and Gentiles (i.e., the Church) would work together someday for God. NOTE – The New International Version (NIV) isn’t the only version to render a verse better than the King James Version ( Lev 11:20 ). Consider Isaiah 21:8 and Isaiah 44:8b , where the Complete Jewish Bible by David H. Stern and the New King James Version does a better job of translating the text than does the King James Version. 16:26 This word ( everlasting ) comes from the exact same Greek word ( DLZQLο9 ) translated “ since the world began ” in verse 25, thus this word ( everlasting ) is a mistranslation of the word. NOTE – Christians must remember that an English version of a Greek text is just that –a version. It is not inspired; it is simply a translation of one language into another, and sometimes, unfortunately, there are mistakes made by the translators ( Mt 7:22 , Rom 16:25 b and Rev 9:16 ). 1 Bruce M.
