JOHN 11:17

36 Say ye of him , whom the Father hath sanctified , and sent into the world , Thou blasphemest ; because I said , I am the Son of God ? 37 If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not . 38 But if I do , though ye believe not me , 1 believe the works : that ye may know , and believe , that the 2 FATHER is in ME , and 3 I in HIM . 39 Therefore they sought again to take him: but he escaped out of their hand, 40 And went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.

Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 (It was that 4 Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. 4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death , but for the glory of God , that the Son of God might be glorified thereby . 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again . 8 His disciples say unto him, Master, 5 the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? 9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day ? If any man walk in the day , he stumbleth not , because he seeth the light of this world . 10 But if amanwalk in the night , he stum- bleth , because there is no light in him . 11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth ; but I go , that I may awake him out of sleep . 12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead . 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there , to the intent ye may believe ; nevertheless let us go unto him . 16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. 17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

1. that is, “ believe the miracles ( works ) that are promised to the Jews” Note - The “ works ” here were the miracles. According to Exodus 4:1-9, Mark 16:17-20, Acts 2:22 & 3:1-12 and Hebrews 2:4, the “sign gifts” (works –tongues, miracles, and miraculous healings) were always performed by a Jew for the unbelieving Jews (I Cor 14:22). Paul said in I Corinthians 1:22, “ For the Jews require a sign (works), and the Greeks seek after wisdom .” 2. Deut 32:6 & Isa 63:16 & 64:8 3. Isa 9:6 & Jn 14:6-11 4. Jn 12:3 5. DEAD SEA

CHRIST journeys to Bethabara in Perea - Map #26 41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. 42 And many believed on him there. John 11 CHRIST raises Lazarus from the dead Date - AD 31 1 Now a certain man was sick, named

11:11 Lazarus was dead; he was not “asleep” ( sleepeth ). Yet Jesus called his death here “sleep.” In fact, both the OT (Psa 13:3) and the NT use “sleep” as a designation for death. Note the following reasons why death is figuratively depicted as “sleep:” 1. There is a natural similarity between a sleeping body and a corpse, is there not? A person sleeping can be an ugly thing. Yea, the sights, sounds, and smells of a sleeping person can be quite disturbing, indeed. 2. Just as the mind, heart, and will of a sleeping man still exists (though he is oblivious to his surroundings - Judg 4:17-21), so in death the soul of a man is not destroyed; rather, it is simply unaware of what’s happening on earth (Lk 16:19-31). 3. Just as the sleeping man awakes and rises from his bed, so the dead will awake and rise from the grave (Rev 20:11-12). 4. Just as the sleeping man is subject to God (Does not God control all visions and dreams? – Gen 15:12 and Dan 1:17), so the dead are accountable to God (Rev 20:13-15). So, the next time you sleep … remember: (1) you’re just like a corpse; (2) you’re never more “vulnerable” than when you’re asleep; (3) you will awake before God someday; and (4) you are accountable for what you think even when you’re thinking subconsciously (in your dreams).
