JOHN 10:11

JOHN 10:35

1746

The promise of CHRIST’S redemptive work (Fulfilled - Jn 19:28,30 - AD 32) 11 I AM the 1 GOOD SHEPHERD : 2 the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep . P 12 But he that is an hireling , and not the shepherd , whose own the sheep are not , seeth the wolf coming , and leaveth the sheep , and fleeth : and the wolf catcheth them , and scattereth the sheep . 13 The hireling fleeth , because he is an hireling , and careth not for the sheep . 14 I am the good shepherd , and 3 know my sheep , and am known of mine . 15 As the Father knoweth me , even so know I the Father : 2 and I lay down my life for the sheep . P 16 And 4 other sheep I have , which are not of this fold : them also I must bring , and they shall hear my voice ; and there shall be one fold , and one shepherd . 17 Therefore doth my Father love me , 2 because I lay down my life , that I might take it again . P 18 No man taketh it from me , 2 but I lay it down of myself . I have power to lay it down , and I have power to take it again . This commandment have I received of my Father . P 19 There was a division therefore again among the Jews for these sayings. 20 And many of them said, He hath a devil, and is mad; why hear ye him? 21 Others said, These are not the words of him that hath a devil. Can a devil open the eyes of the blind?

CHRIST again confirms His deity 22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch. 24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus answered them , I told you , and ye believed not : the works that I do in my Father’s name , they bear witness of me . 26 But ye believe not , because ye are not of my sheep , as I said unto you . 27 My sheep hear my voice , and I know them , and they follow me : 28 And I 5 give unto them eternal life ; and they shall never perish , neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand . 29 My Father , which gave them me , is greater than all ; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand . 30 I and my Father are 6 one . 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father ; for which of those works do ye stone me ? 33 The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. 34 Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law , I said , 7 Ye are gods ? 35 If he called them gods , unto whom the word of God came , and the scripture cannot be broken ;

10:22 Judas Maccabeus (164 BC) is the man responsible for instituting the “feast of the dedication ,” also called Hanukkah. The Jews observe this feast every December as it marks the cleansing of the Temple after Antiochus Epiphanes desecrated it in 168 BC (Dan 11:31-32). Jesus took advantage of this extra-biblical traditional feast in order to speak with the Jews who assembled themselves on such an occasion. Biblically speaking, there were only seven feasts required by law ( Lev 23:2 ). Both the “feast of the dedication ” and the “Feast of Purim” were added by the Jews ( Lev 16:29 ). 10:27 A good shepherd will become so close to his sheep ( and I know them ) that he will carry their scent (he will stink of them - Mt 9:10-11). A pastor that avoids milling ( given to hospitality – I Tim 3:2) with his flock is not a pastor... he’s an administrator. 10:28-29 Jesus promised the NT saints what He promised the OT saints – eternal life “forever” in Heaven ( Psa 37:28 ) to those who trusted Him to be their sacrifice for sin. Both Jesus ( Mt 13:44-45 ) and the Apostles ( II Tim 1:12 , Eph 1:13-14 & 4:30, Phil 1:6 , Heb 7:25 , I Pet 4:19 and I Jn 5:13) taught all about the eternal security of the believer. There isn’t a man or a movement ( and

no man ) that can take salvation from you once you have it, not by their doctrine or their dictation. NOTE – There are three reasons why a person can be confident in their “eternal security:” 1. Eternal security is logical (Jn 3:1-10) 2. Eternal security is scriptural (Jn 3:11-18,36) 3. Eternal security is eternal (Jn 4:7-14 and Jude 24-25)

Critics of the “once saved, always saved” doctrine claim that it gives Christians a license to sin. They presume that those who believe in eternal security intend to accept salvation, and then continue to willingly sin. How absurd! Why would anyone presenting the Gospel of CHRIST tell people that they can sin all they want now that they are saved? Critics need to blame the old nature for sins committed after salvation, not the doctrine of eternal security. Any person, who is willing to repent of his sin and turn towards the cross, trusting Jesus as his Savior, will be saved (Lk 23:39-43 and Acts 16:31). That kind of salvation is a ‘once-and-for-all, eternal, and secure’ kind of salvation ( Heb 6:4a ). Salvation is based upon ‘facts,’ not feelings ( I Cor 15:1 ).
