LUKE 13:32
LUKE 14:12
1664
32 And he said unto them, Go ye, and tell that fox, Behold, I cast out devils, and I do cures to day and to morrow, and the third day 1 I shall be perfected. 33 Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem. 34 2 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which 3 killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood 4 under her wings, and ye would not! 35 Behold, 5 your house is left unto you desolate: and verily I say unto you, Ye shall not see me, 6 until the time come when ye shall say, 7 Blessed is 8 HE that cometh in the name of the Lord . P P Luke 14 CHRIST heals a man of leprosy Date - AD 31 1 And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. 2 And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. 3 And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day ? 4 And they held their peace. him, and healed him, and let him go; 5 And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox 9 fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day ? 6 And they could not answer him again to these things. Parable #22 - The wedding guest [A lesson for both unbelievers (Lk 14:1-11) and believers (Lk 14:12-14) - Learn to view humility like God views humility or face the consequences in eternity] 7 And he put forth a parable to 10 those which were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief rooms; saying unto them, 8 When thou art bidden of any man to a wedding, 11 sit not down in the highest room; lest a more honourable man than thou be bidden of him ; 9 And he that bade thee and him come and say to thee, Give this man place; and thou begin with shame to take the lowest room . 10 But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest room; that when he that bade thee cometh, he may say unto thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have 12 worship in the presence of them that sit at meat with thee . 11 13 For whosoever exalteth himself shall be 14 abased ; 15 and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted . 12 Then said he also 16 to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a,

14:1 According to verses 12-14, this chief Pharisee was a saved man. Note the statement from Jesus, “ And thou shalt be blessed; for they cannot recompense thee: for thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just .” According to the New Testament, there were a number of Pharisees that were saved: Paul (Phil 3:5), Nicodemus (Jn 3:1 & 7:50 & 19:38-39) and a host of others (Acts 15:1-5). However, fear of criticism from within Judaism kept most of them silent as believers (Jn 7:13 & 9:22 & 12:42-43 & 19:38). 14:2 Dropsy was a swelling of the body caused by the retention of excessive liquid in the tissues. This man’s pitiful condition would have been obvious to all. 14:7 Parable #22 is aimed at both unbelievers (Lk 14:1-11) and believers (Lk 14:12-14) who live for the limelight and the praise of men ( they chose out the chief rooms ). Confronted by hypocritical lawyers and Pharisees, Christ reveals two character flaws associated with seeking honor: – assuming you’ll find it (vs 8) The only thing self-exaltation leads to is blindness. The more you seek honor, the less you’ll see clearly. The lawyers and Pharisees had no problem with rescuing animals on the Sabbath day (vs 5), but objected to helping humans. How sightless is that? Lesson - Never assume rising to the top actually gets you there. The top of the bottom is still at the bottom. – assuming it will last (vs 9) One may think he has found honor amongst those who also seek it, but it will not last. If it doesn’t last, then it isn’t real. If it isn’t real, then it was only temporal, for only that which lasts is real (II Cor 4:17-18). Because it requires humility to enter Heaven, humility is eternal (vs 14). Humility not only gets you to Heaven (Mt 18:3), it helps you to enjoy it once you get there (Mt 18:4, Jms 4:10, I Pet 5:5-6). Lesson - Never assume that the temporal lasts forever. It will not. NOTE – Learn to view humility like God views humility or face the consequences in eternity. 14:11 “ Humility” is the passport to promotion in God’s Kingdom ( I Ki 21:29 ).
