loosed from thine infirmity . 13 And he laid his hands on her: 8 and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. 14 And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath day, and said unto the people, 9 There are six days in which men ought to work: in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath day. 15 The Lord then answered him, and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? 16 And ought not this woman, being a daughter of 10 Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day ? 17 And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were 11 ashamed: and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him. 18 Then said he, Unto what is the kingdom of God like? and whereunto shall I resemble it ? 19 It is like a grain of 12 mustard seed, which a 5 MAN took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the 13 fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it . Parable #9 (repeated) - The leaven [A lesson for the saved - Never assume that God’s work cannot be infiltrated and polluted. It can - Acts 20:27-31 and Mt 7:15-20] (S/A - Mt 13:33-35) 20 And again he said, Whereunto shall I liken the kingdom of God ? 21 It is like 14 leaven, which a 15 woman took and hid in 16 three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened . Parable #8 (repeated) - The mustard seed [A lesson for the saved - Never assume outward growth is a picture of spiritual depth. It is not.] (S/A - Mt 13:31-32 and Mk 4:30-34)
1. Note - Everyone ( ye ) needs to repent. Jesus said so. Seeing death is impartial, “all” need to repent or face judgment ( Mt 22:10 ). 2. Note - Like parable #4 and #14, this parable is aimed at helping the lost see their need for a Savior. Just as a fig tree must produce fruit or face being cut down, so an unsaved person must produce the fruit of repentance or face the judgment of God (Mt 3:1-10). Parable #21 is aimed at un- believers who fail to repent because they fail to see their sin as God sees it . The character flaw – assuming only “bad” sinners need to repent . According to Romans 3:23, “ all have sinned ” therefore “all” need to repent. 3. or, “God the Father” - Isa 5:7 4. or, “Israel” - Hos 9:10 & Joel 1:7 5. or, “Christ” 6. or, “purge it” - Jn 15:2 7. Fulfilled - AD 70 (Fall of Jerusalem) 8. Psa 146:8 9. Exo 20:9-10 10. Gen 15:1-4 11. Isa 45:24 12. or, “a picture of Christianity” 13. or, “false religions that infiltrate Christianity” - Mt 13:4 & Rev 18:2 14. or, “false doc- trines that infiltrate Christianity” 15. or, “false religion” - Rev 17 16. Luke 13 All have sinned, thus all are equally sinful Date - AD 31 1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? 3 I tell you, Nay: but, except 1 ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish . 6 He spake also 2 this parable; A certain 3 MAN had a 4 fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. 7 Then said HE unto the 5 DRESSER of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? 8 And HE answering said unto him, LORD , let it alone this year also, till I shall 6 dig about it, and dung it : 9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt 7 cut it down . P CHRIST heals a woman on the Sabbath 10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath. 11 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. 12 And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art Parable #21 - The barren fig tree [A lesson for the unsaved - Learn to view your sin as God views it. Then repent]
13:6 When God grants spiritual privileges like He did to the nation of Israel, He has a right to expect fruit ( Mk 11:13 ). 13:16 Sickness is not always the result of sin (Jn 5:14). Sometimes (as it is here) it is the result of Satan exhibiting his free will upon men ( whom Satan hath bound ). Other times it is the purpose of God ( Jn 9 :1- 3 ). The Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia notes: It may not always be possible to distinguish whether an illness is the result of purely natural causes, an act of God, or the evil design of Satan. Perhaps all three may be active at the same time. Whatever the cause of a Christian’s disease, however, he is promised that one day suffering will be removed, when God shall “wipe away every tear” and there will be pain no longer (Rev 21:4). 1 Our job as believers is to learn to be content no matter what “state” we are in (Phil 4:10-12 and II Cor 12:7-10).
