LUKE 10:18

LUKE 10:29

18 And he said unto them, 1 I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven . 19 Behold, 2 I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you . 20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather 3 rejoice, because your names are 4 written in heaven . 21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, 5 I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight . 22 6 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him . 23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, 7 Blessed are the eyes

which see the things that ye see : 24 For I tell you, that many 8 prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them . 25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, 9 what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how 10 readest thou ? Love thy neighbor as thyself means - “Taking time to love the unlovely” 27 And he answering said, 11 Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and 12 thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: 13 this do, and thou shalt live . 29 But he, willing to 14 justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

10:18 There are three truths that we can take away from Jesus’ statement here in verse 18: 1. Jesus existed before He was born ( Gen 1:3a ) Jesus said, “ I was there when Satan fell.” And we know that Satan fell long before man was ever created ( Gen 2:9 ). 2. After Lucifer fell God changed Lucifer’s name (Isa 14:12-14) The name Lucifer means “Son of the morning; the shining one.” After his fall, however, God changed his name to Satan (the adversary of God - Job 1:7 ). Why? Because God always changes your name to fit your character ( Rev 2:17c ). 3. God’s sentence upon Satan (Hell – Isa 14:15 and Mt 25:41) was not immediately carried out According to Matthew 25:41b , there is a gap between the sentence (Isa 14:12-14) and the carrying out of the sentence (Mt 8:28-29). Why did God delay sending the Devil and his minions to Hell right away? Two reasons: * God wanted to show all of creation what justice and mercy truly looks like * God wanted to show all of creation just how foolish “wisdom without God” truly is (I Cor 2:7-8) 10:19 There is considerable confusion in our day regarding the question of the demonization of Christians. Some teach that believers can be demon possessed, while others teach they cannot; they can only be oppressed, not possessed. Everitt M. Fjordbak in Why Christians Cannot Be Demon Possessed notes: Jesus reminded the seventy (vs 17) here that they had power “ over all the power of the enemy. ” Why? Because they were purchased by the blood of the LAMB (Acts 20:28) and their “ names are written in heaven ” (vs 20); they’re secure! Again, if a believer is eternally secure (and he is – Jn 10 :27- 28-29 ) because he has been purchased, how then can he be possessed (repurchased)? NOTE – Jesus promised believers (who refuse to forgive) demonic oppression ( Mt 18 :21- 34 ), not demonic possession. Seriously, if the THIRD PERSON of the Triune Godhead lives within us as believers (and He does), and “greater is HE that is in you, than he (the Devil) that is in the world” (I Jn 4:4), how then can a demon abide where GOD abides? How can God and one of Satan’s imps live side by side in the same house? The answer is he can’t. Jesus said in John 8:36: If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed Because a believer is eternally secure, he can only be oppressed (Mt 16:21-23 and I Cor 3:15b & 5:1-5), not possessed. 10:20 The disciples of Christ were given marvelous privileges for which countless others before them longed (vs 23-24). They were to “ rejoice ,” however, in the promise of salvation, not the power of gifts. 10:22 Whereas George Berry’s Interlinear Greek-English New Testament includes the entire opening clause “ .DL στUDMHL9 SUο9 τοX9 PDθKτD9 HLSHQ ” ( And having turned to the disciples he said ), 2 the King James Version completely omits it. Why? We’re not sure. Could it have been a mechanical mistake (a scribal error), when translating the Scriptures ( Acts 7:45 )? We’re not sure. We just know it’s missing from the English text. Christians must remember that the King James Version is just that –a version. It is not inspired; it is simply a translation of one language into another, and sometimes, unfortunately, there are mistakes made by the translators. Yet, despite the few “flaws” (less than 50 verses out of the 31,100 plus verses are even in question – Lk 3:36 ) the Bible is not in doubt. What we hold in our hands is an accurate translation of the original autographs, as the science and history of manuscripts attest ( Lk 2:40 ). For example: The most common preconception which paves the way for this assumption is the doctrine of eternal security. If a believer cannot fall from grace, then it is certainly raises a logical and doctrinal possibility of such risk. The problem is more one of the security of the believer than of demonization of the child of God. 1
