cried, 9 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear . 9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables ; 10 that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and 11 riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with 12 patience. 1 And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, 2 And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, 3 And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance. 8:2 Mary Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils (demons), came from Magdala, a town located on the Sea of Galilee just north of Tiberius. Because the names of the other women who accompanied Jesus from Galilee to Jerusalem with her vary, she is considered the most prominent witness to His death, burial, and resurrection. Mary is named in all four Gospels. There is even a letter which has surfaced that bears her name, called The Gospel of Mary . It consists of nine chapters, five (chapters 1-3,6-7) of which are missing. Although Mary is unlikely to have written the letter (portions of Mary’s statements contradict the Bible), some have tried to push for the canonization of it ( Lk 11:51 ). 8:4 Subject Head The spotlight of Parable #5 is on the soil , representing a person’s heart and his reaction toward the Gospel. 8:13 There are four grounds (hearts) upon which the Word of God falls: 1. Wayside hearts –hearts that are unresponsive (vs 5) to God’s Word and are thus unregenerate because they are so easily deceived by Satan (vs 12) 2. Waterless hearts –hearts that are promising ( for a while ), but because of a continued lack of interest in God’s Word ( because it lacked moisture – vs 6) remain unregenerate (vs 13) 3. Wayward hearts –hearts that are regenerated ( go forth – vs 14), but get sidetracked by the world, the devil, and the flesh (vs 7) Luther C. Peak in The Gospel of the King and the Kingdom notes:
This represents a class of people who see the value and blessing of becoming Christians, and who become children of God. However, the temptations of this present evil world prove too much for them. The cares of this temporal life and the deceitfulness of riches prevent them from bearing any fruit whatever. 1
4. Witnessing hearts –hearts that are regenerated ( good ground – vs 8) and become fruitful ( and bring forth fruit – vs 15) 8:16 A candlestick depicts the Church (Rev 1:20). Thus, believers are supposed to “light” their world from their local assembly. 1 Peak, Luther C. The Gospel of the King and the Kingdom , Dallas, TX, The Evangelist Press, 1942. Print.
