About the Author : Luke, whose name means “light giving,” was not an eyewitness of the accounts written in the Gospel of Luke . A Gentile, Luke gained this knowledge from the Lord (Colo 4:14). A physician by trade, Luke could have possibly obtained his medical training at Athens, Tarsus, or Alexandria. He became a life long companion and fellow worker of the apostle Paul, apparently coming into contact with him through his services as a doctor. About the Book : Luke presents Jesus as the SON OF MAN (Lk 19:10), and emphasizes his perfect humanity. Jesus’ birth, infancy, and childhood are given the most detailed account. His divine genealogy is traced to Adam through Mary, His earthly mother. No other Gospel gives the details of the many human aspects of Christ, as did Luke. The book of Luke covers 34 years (from c. 2 BC - AD 32). Notes of Interest : 1. Luke quotes the OT 25 times. 8 of those 25 quotes refer directly to CHRIST . Note - 10 of the 25 OT quotations refer directly to the Pentateuch. Note - Psalms is the OT book most often quoted in the book of Luke ( 7 quotations). 2. Prophecies are referred to 126 times in Luke . 3. Prophecies concerning CHRIST are referred to 89 of those 126 times. 4. Prophecies concerning the HOLY SPIRIT are referred to 2 of those 126 times. 5. There are 50 different OT characters referred to in Luke . Note - Abraham is the OT character most often referred to in the book of Luke ( 15 times). 6.
