MATTHEW 22:8

MATTHEW 22:28

1540

8 Then saith he to his 1 servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. 9 Go ye therefore into the 2 highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. 10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. 11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a WEDDING GARMENT : 12 And he saith unto him, 3 Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into 4 outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few are chosen . A question is asked concerning tribute (S/A - Mk 12:13-17 & Lk 20:20-26) 15 Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. 16 And they sent out unto him their disciples with the 5 Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carestthou for any man: for thou regardest not the person of men.

17 Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? 18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites ? 19 Shew me the tribute money . And they brought unto him a penny. 20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription ? 21 They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God 6 the things that are God’s . 22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way. A question is asked concerning the resurrection (S/A - Mk 12:18-27 & Lk 20:27-40) 23 The same day came to him the Saddu- cees, 7 which say that there is no resurrec- tion, and asked him, 24 Saying, Master, Moses said, 8 If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. 25 Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: 26 Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. 27 And last of all the woman died also. 28 Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

22:8 The Jews ( they which were bidden ) thought they were worthy of Heaven because they were Jews. They were not (Mt 3:7-10). 22:10 According to Jesus, not just bad people are lost and need to be found. According to Jesus, “ both bad and good ” people people are considered lost and need to be saved. That’s not so with religion. To religion, only the bad sinner is considered lost. According to religion, as long as someone is “trying” to save himself by observing a designated set of “do’s and don’ts” set up by that religion, then he’s not lost, because he’s saving himself. However, to God both the good and the bad sinner are considered lost and need saving (Lk 13:1-5). For example, the thief on the cross, by his own admission (Lk 23:39-41), was someone we would consider a bad sinner. On the other hand, Cornelius, the Gentile centurion in Acts 10, was a devout man (Acts 10:1-2) and someone we would consider a good sinner. Yet, according to both accounts, both needed saving. To God, a sinner is a sinner. “All” come short of the glory of God. NOTE - People are not sent to Hell for being bad any more than people are allowed into Heaven for being good . God does not consign men to their eternal destinies based on their temporal actions (be they bad or good ). God consigns men to their eternal destinies based on their decision to either accept or reject the only way an eternal God chose to pay for those temporal wrong doings ( Rom 1:16 ). 22:11 The “ WEDDING GARMENT ” is a picture of the righteousness of CHRIST (II Cor 5:21, Titus 3:5, Gal 2:21-3:24, Gen 3:21 , Isa 61:10 and Zech 3:4 ). Man can only wear one of two mantels: * The mantel of self-righteousness (works) ( Gen 3:7 ) * The mantel of CHRIST’S righteousness (grace) ( Eph 2:8-9 and Rom 3:10,21-31 & 4:1-8,13,22 & 10:1-4) 22:12 It’s hard to find excuses ( speechless ) for not getting saved when “you yourself” are to blame ( Gen 4:7 , Jn 3:17 and Acts 1:20,25 ). 22:14 The Gospel calls many people to salvation ( Eph 1:4 a ), sadly however, few choose it ( few are chosen – Mt 7:13-14). 22:21 Christians ought to know the difference between political and spiritual responsibilities (Mt 17:24-27, Rom 13:1-7 and I Pet 2:13-14). Here Jesus is reminding the believer of his political responsibility to pay his taxes ( Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s ) and his spiritual responsibility to obey God (even above the government – Dan 3:16-18 & 6:10, Acts 4:19-20 & 5:28-29 and Rom 13:7 ).
