MATTHEW 16:13

MATTHEW 16:27

1523

Peter, and 9 upon this rock I will build MY church; and the gates of 10 hell shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give unto thee the 11 keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven . 20 12 Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. CHRIST foretells of HIS rejection, betrayal, crucifixion, death, and resurrection (S/A - Mk 8:31 - 9:1 & Lk 9:22-27) 21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and 13 suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. P 22 Then Peter took him, and began to re- buke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men . 24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me . 25 14 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it .

14 And they said, Some say that thou art 1 John the Baptist: some, 2 Elias; and others, 3 Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am ? 16 And Simon Peter answered and said, 4 Thou art the 5 CHRIST , the 6 Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for 7 flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my 8 FATHER which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art

26 For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the 15 SONOFMAN shall come in 16:14 The reason people thought Jesus might have been Jeremiah (raised from the dead) is because Jesus, like Jeremiah (the weeping prophet - Jere 9:1 & 13:17 & 14:17 and Lam 1:16), was known to have wept a great deal. The NT records for us three different reasons why Christ wept: 1. He wept over our faithlessness (Jn 11:32-35 & Lk 24:25-26 and Heb 13:5) 2. He wept over our missed spiritual opportunities (Lk 19:41-44) 3. He wept over broken fellowship due to our sin ( Mt 26: 36- 39 -46, Psa 51:12-17 and Jn 12:27) Christians need to learn to weep for the same reasons Christ wept –over faithlessness , missed spiritual opportunities , and broken fellowship due to sin . 16:18 a Peter’s name here comes from the Greek word 3HτUο9 ( petros ) and means, “ a moveable stone ,” like a pebble tossed about in a riverbed (Jn 1:42). Considerable misunderstanding has sprung up because of this verse, which would have been avoided if note had been taken of the difference in these two words within the Greek text. Whereas Peter ( 3HτUο9 - petros ) is “ a moveable (unstable) stone ” (ready to die for his Lord at one hour - Mt 26:33-35, and denying Him the next - Mt 26:69-75), Christ ( SHτUD - petra ) is a fixed, immovable ROCK (I Cor 10:4), the only foundation upon which men can have salvation (Acts 4:11-12 and I Cor 3:10-11). 16:18 b This “ rock ” ( SHτUD - petra ) upon which Jesus would built His Church was not Peter ( 3HτUο9 - petros ), but Peter’s confession in verse 16 that he understood Jesus to be the promised OT MESSIAH (the ROCK ) (I Jn 5:1). The only foundation for our salvation is an understanding of who the OT MESSIAH is and what He’s done.
