37:36 The term “pharaoh” is the title used for Egyptian kings. It is the Hebrew form of the Egyptian title “the great house.” Much of what we know today concerning Egyptian history was written down for us by one man, Manetho, an Egyptian priest and historian, who lived around 250 BC. It was, therefore, one man who arranged Egyptian history, as we know it. Egyptian history is fairly well established back to 1600 BC, but beyond that it is very uncertain. In fact, the most famous Egyptologists (Petrie and Brested) differ as to the beginning point of Egyptian history by more than two thousand years. Petrie says 5500 BC. Brested says 3400 BC. The Bible suggests a beginning point to Egyptian history at c. 3100 BC. NOTE – There are sixteen different Pharaohs mentioned in the Bible: 1. Sesostris I from the Middle Kingdom Period (c. 1950-1878 BC) – Gen 11:30-21:34 2. Hyksos kings from the Second Intermediate Period (c. 1730-1600 BC) – Gen 33:20 – Exo 1:8 (Acts 7:10,13) 3. Thutmose III from the New Kingdom Period (c. 1480-1463 BC) – Exo 3:1-10 – Num 20:21 (Deut 6:21-22 & 7:8,18 & 11:3 & 29:2 & 34:11, I Sam 2:27 & 6:6 and Rom 9:17) 7.
