11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and 1 worshipped him: and when they had opened their trea- sures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country an- other way. Joseph is warned of God to flee into Egypt 13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. 14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:

15 And was there until the 2 death of Her- od: that it might be fulfilled which was spo- ken of the LORD by the prophet, saying, 3 Out of Egypt have I called my 4 SON . 2:11 It was Eastern custom that one did not approach a king without a “gift” (I Chro 18:2,6, Psa 72:10 and Isa 60:6). Yet these wise men from Babylon knew this was no ordinary king. Without a doubt, these Magi were familiar with Daniel’s prophecy concerning the coming of the promised OT MESSIAH , the PRINCE ( KING – Dan 9:24-27), for through their gifts they knew who CHRIST was ( gold depicts deity ), they knew what HE was willing to become ( frankincense depicts humanity ), and they knew what HE had come to do ( myrrh was used for embalming and depicts His atoning death for sinners ). Their view of the SAVIOR was no different than Abraham’s view of the SAVIOR ( Gen 22 :1- 8a,b / Jn 8:56 and I Cor 15:1 ). 2:16 One of the cruelest rulers of all time, Herod not only slew these young Jewish children in Bethlehem, but he also murdered Hyrcanus (31 BC), who provided the link he needed with the Jews, and his own wife (Mariamne, granddaughter of Hyrcanus) and their two sons. The king of the Jews was anything but kind to the Jews. 2:18 According to Jewish tradition, about eighteen children were slain by Herod during this time.
