3. Tiberius

Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus succeeded his stepfather, Augustus Caesar, to the throne in AD 14. Born in 42 BC, son of the Empress Livia, wife of Augustus, by her first husband, Tiberius Claudius Nero, Tiberius is remembered as being a capable and fair Roman emperor, but he remained very unpopular. In AD 26, after only twelve years of rule, Tiberius decided to withdraw from Rome and take up his residence on the island of Capreae, some 100 miles south of Rome, never to set foot in the city again. Lucius Aelius Sejanus, Tiberius’ principal adviser, was probably the one who prompted Tiberius to move. Tiberius died on March 16, AD 37. He was the reigning emperor at the time of CHRIST’S death and resurrection.

4. Gaius Claudius Caesar Acts 6:1 - 9:25 5. Claudius Drusus

Otherwise known as Caligula, Gaius was the adopted son of Tiberius. He is remembered for having gone mad to the point of selecting his favorite horse to be a member of the Senate. His own bodyguards killed him in AD 41. The first deacons; Saul (Paul) receives CHRIST as his Savior and is born-again Claudius was Gaius’ uncle. At first he gave to the Jews the right to religious worship, but later banished all Jews from Rome (Acts 18:2). The famine foretold by Agabus (Acts 11:28) took place during his reign. Ancient writers tell us that Claudius Drusus’ reign was a period of great distress over the entire Mediterranean world. He too was assassinated. His stepson, Nero took his place as emperor in AD 54.
