HABAKKUK 2:8

HABAKKUK 3:11

1416

8 1 Because thou hast spoiled many nations, 2 all the remnant of the people shall spoil thee; because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein. P 9 2 Woe to him that coveteth an evil cov- etousness 3 to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil! P 10 Thou hast consulted shame to thy house by cutting off many people, and hast sinned against thy soul. 11 2 For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it. P 12 2 Woe to him that 3 buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity! P 13 Behold, is it not of the LORD OF HOSTS 4 that the people shall labour in the very fire, and the people shall 5 weary themselves for very vanity? 14 6 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the 7 LO R D , as the waters cover the sea. P 15 8 Woe unto him that giveth his neigh- bour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, 9 and makest him 10 drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness! 16 Thou art filled with shame for glory: drink thou also, and let thy foreskin be uncovered: the cup of the LORD’S right hand 11 shall be turned unto thee, and shameful spewing shallbe onthyglory. P 17 For the violence of Lebanon 11 shall cover thee, and the spoil of beasts, which made them afraid, because of men’s blood, and for the violence of the land, of the city, and of all that dwell therein. P 18 What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the mol- ten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? 19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. 20 But the 7 LO R D is in his holy temple:

let all the earth keep silence before him. Habakkuk 3 Habakkuk’s prayer of praise Date Written - c. 607 BC/AM 3393 1 A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet 12 upon Shigionoth. 2 O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid: O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; 13 in wrath remember mercy. Habakkuk recalls the events of the Exodus and Sinai 3 GOD came from Teman, and the HOLY 14 O N E from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. 4 And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power. 5 Before him went the 15 pestilence, and burning coals went forth at his feet. 6 He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scat- tered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting. 7 I saw the tents of 16 Cushan in afflic- tion: and the curtains of the land of Mid- ian did tremble. 8 Was the LORD displeased against the 17 rivers? was thine anger against the rivers? was thy wrath against the 18 sea, that thou didst ride upon thine horses and thy chariots of salvation? 9 Thy bow was made quite naked, ac- cording to the oaths of the tribes, even thy word. Selah. Thou didst cleave the earth with rivers. 10 The mountains saw thee, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: 19 the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high. Habakkuk recalls Joshua’s great battle 11 20 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of thine ar- rows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear.

2:8 God’s plan was to use Babylon against Judah (Hab 1:6-10) like He had used Assyria against Israel –like a paddle ( Isa 10:5 ). Yet, like Assyria ( Isa 10:12 -19), God would eventually break ( shall spoil thee ) the paddle (Babylon) that He used to spank Judah with. NOTE - No one gets away with fighting against God’s people (Obad 1,9-15), not even Satan (Rev 19:11 – 20:3). 2:15 Despite what some believers might think, God has yet to change his mind about alcohol ( Prov 23:31 and Acts 2:15 ), and those who dispense it to others ( Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink ). 3:3 This word ( Selah ) is found only in the Psalms (71 times) and Habakkuk (3 times) and means “ to pause (to weigh one’s thoughts) and praise .” This “ pause and praise ” (thought to be equivalent to a musical rest) came after Habakkuk recalled the Theophany (or self-manifestation of Jehovah) when He delivered His people from Egypt and brought them to Sinai ( GOD came from Teman, and the HOLY O N E from mount Paran ). Whenever we catch God keeping His Word (vs 3-15), we should “ pause and praise ” ( Selah ).
