2 Son of man, set thy face against 11 Gog, the land of Magog, the chief prince of 12 Meshech and 13 Tubal, and prophesy against him, 3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Be- hold I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: 4 And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and 14 I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: P 5 Persia, Ethiopia, and Libya with them; 14 all of them with shield and helmet: P 6 15 Gomer, and all his bands; the house of 16 Togarmah of the north quarters, and all his bands: 14 and many people with thee. P 7 Be thou prepared, and prepare for thy- self, thou, and all thy company that are as- sembled unto thee, and be thou a 17 guard unto them. 8 14 After many days 11 thou shalt be vis- ited: in the latter years thou shalt come into the land that is brought back from the sword, and is gathered out of many people, against themountains of Israel, which have been always waste: but it is brought forth out of the nations, and they shall dwell safely all of them. P

38:2a Both Josephus 1 (the Jewish historian) and Wilhelm Gesenius 2 (world-class Hebrew Scholar - 1786-1842) identified Magog with the area north and northeast of the Black Sea now occupied by Russia and other former Soviet nations. The people of Magog descended from Japheth, one of Noah’s sons (Gen 10:2). Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins in Are We Living in the End Times? note: Etymologically, the Gog and Magog of Ezekiel 38 and 39 can only mean modern-day Russia. 3 38:2b Meshech , known to us now as Moscow, was built c. AD 1300. For the next 700 years (from 1300-1919) the Czars would rule from this city and the people would be their servants (but at least the people ate). Then came the Communistic leader Vladimer Lenin (1917-1924) and his socialistic regime. Since Lenin the Soviet Union has been led by: Joseph Stalin (1924-1953), Nikita Khrushchev (1953-1964), Leonid Brezhnev (1966-1982), Yuri Andropov (1982-1984), Konstantin Cherenko (1984-1985), etc. 38:4 After the collapse of the Soviet Union on December 31, 1991, which was due in part to its ill-fated decision to invade Afghanistan from 1979-1989, people around the world thought that Russia’s dominance throughout the world was over. They were wrong. Although weakened momentarily by the dissolution of her confederacy, because God promised Ezekiel that He would “ put hooks ” in the jaws of Magog’s mouth and turn her around in the latter years (vs 8,16), Russia is once again on the move and partnering up with Persia (Iran) as she sets her eyes on the prize (Israel). This end-times conflict is called the Battle of Gog and Magog. Activated by animosity for Israel and jealousy over her abundant prosperity (possibly including recent discoveries of massive oil and gas fields), the Russian-Islamic coalition will storm Israel in a major surprise attack at some point during the first half of the Tribulation. 4
