EZEKIEL 18:13

18 Seeing he despised the oath by break- ing the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and hath done all these things, he shall not escape. 19 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; As I live, surely mine oath that he hath despised, and my covenant that he hath broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head. 20 1 And I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he hath trespassed against me. P 21 1 And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and ye shall know that I the LORD have spoken it. P The promise of new life ; of HIS First Coming ; of a Kingdom where HE will rule 22 Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also take of the highest 2 BRANCH of the 3 high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a 4 TENDER ONE , and will plant 5 IT upon an high mountain and eminent: PPP 23 In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant 5 IT : and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell. P 24 And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the 6 high tree, have exalted the 7 low tree, have dried up the 6 green tree, and have made the 7 dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken 5 and have done it. again, saying, 2 What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, 9 The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? 3 As I live, saith the Lord GOD, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also 10 the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. 5 But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, 6 And hath not eaten upon the moun- tains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a 11 menstruous woman, 7 And hath not 12 oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his 13 pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath 14 given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8 He that hath not given forth upon 15 usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniqui- ty, hath executed true judgment 16 between man and man, 9 Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely 17 live, saith the Lord GOD. 10 If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things, 11 And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife, 12 Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, 13 Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abomina- tions; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

17:18 Ezekiel’s parable of the 2 eagles was aimed at God’s people who broke their word ( despised the oath ) and thought nothing of it . The character flaw – assuming that breaking one’s word does not have consequences . It does (Josh 9:19-20 and Eccl 5:1-6). 17:19 Not only did the people of God break “their” word, but they broke “God’s Word” ( mine oath ) as well (Jere 27:1-15 and II Chro 36:13). Woe to the individual who breaks his word and thinks nothing of it. NOTE – This is why divorce is so devastating. You not only broke your word to your spouse, you broke your vow to God (Deut 23:21-23). 18:2 The inhabitants of Jerusalem were wrong ( What mean ye ) in saying that the judgment that they were experiencing was due to their forefather’s sinfulness. While it is true there are snowballing effects of sin ( Exo 20:5 ), the Lord here declares that each individual is responsible for his own sin ( the soul that sinneth , it shall die – vs 3-4). 18:5 Being “ lawful ” meant following all five parts of the Old Testament Law (vs 6-13): (1) Moral Laws (crimes against God); (2) Civil Laws (crimes against people); (3) Personal Laws (crimes against the body); (4) Separation Laws (crimes against the nation); and (5) Ceremonial Laws (laws that pointed to CHRIST ).
