34 The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet 3 against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying, P 35 Thus saith the LORD OF HOSTS ; 3 Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might. P 36 3 And upon 4 Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come. P 37 3 For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them: P 38 3 And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD. P 39 But it shall come to pass 5 in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD. 49:28 Kedar belonged to a tribe of the Bedouin type (desert people), which descended from Ishmael (Gen 25:13). 49:34 Elam was the firstborn son of Seth (Gen 10:22 and I Chro 1:17), and father of the Elamites. A powerful nation during the second millennium BC (Gen 14:1-11), Elam was conquered by the Assyrians c. 640 BC. When Assyria fell to Babylon in 612 BC, Elam regained back its independence and later helped the Medes and Persians to overthrow Babylon (Dan 5:30-31). On the day of Pentecost there were Elamites present in Jerusalem (Acts 2:9). NOTE – Like Moab (Jere 48), Ammon (Jere 49:1-5) and Edom (Obad 1), Elam would be disassembled as a nation. Yet God promised Elam (like He did Moab, Ammon and Edom) that He would bring again the captivity of Elam in the latter days (vs 39). Why? Because of the promise of the firstborn to receive an inheritance. 50:1 Jeremiah devotes the next two chapters (50 and 51) to the destruction of Babylon. Prior to these two chapters only four other verses in Jeremiah’s writings had been dedicated to Babylon’s destruction (Jere 25:12-14 & 27:7). Jeremiah 50 and 51 is not only a prophecy of sentencing against Babylon ; it is also a prophecy of restoration for the nation of Israel (Jere 50:4-8,19-20). 50:2 This specific warning against Babylon was “not to be veiled” ( and conceal not ) within prophecy. The message was not to be hid. Babylon was to know its end. The very nation that Jeremiah was told to campaign for (Jere 1,4-16,18-25,29,32,34-35,37- 38,45), he was now told to curse. Would this new prophecy fare well for the prophet or would the king of Babylon take offense and have Jeremiah killed. According to Jeremiah 39:11-14, Jeremiah was well received by King Nebuchad-nezzar, despite his words against the nation. Why? Because the news he was now hearing from Jeremiah was old news, for Daniel had already pre- warned the king of Babylon of the nation’s demise (Dan 2:36-39).
