45:1a This chapter follows ( when ) the events of Jeremiah 36:1-8. 45:1b Things were pretty bad during the reign of Jehoiakim (Judah’s king from 608-598 BC), and by 605 BC they had gotten progressively worse. Yet this was nothing compared to what was coming. Judah was destined to go through five more deportations (Jere 52:15) before being completely annihilated in 586 BC (II Ki 24:6-25:10). 45:2 Baruch , son of Neriah (Jere 36:4), was an intellectual man who came from a socially prominent family. His grandfather (Maaseiah – Jere 32:12) was governor of Jerusalem during Josiah’s reign (II Chro 34:8), and his brother (Seraiah – Jere 32:12 & 36:4), whom Jeremiah sent to Babylon with a message (Jere 51:59), was a staff officer in Zedekiah’s court. Thinking he was destined for great things himself (some high office – vs 5), Baruch was deeply disappointed that his calling to be Jeremiah’s secretary had ruined his prospects (vs 3). 45:4 God reminded Baruch that “status” was meaningless, especially if there was nothing left to preside over ( that which I have built will I break down ). Rather than pity himself, Baruch needed to pity God who had to tear down something He built. 45:5a What was Baruch thinking? Self-seeking ambition ( And seekest thou great things for thyself ) at a time when the nation was facing divine judgment was hardly appropriate or wise. NOTE – Common sense says, “If there nothing to preside over (vs 4), then there’s no sense having a socially prominent title or position” (Dan 5:13-17). Sometimes… all it takes is some common sense preaching to “wake up” the intellectual (Rom 13:11 and I Thess 5:4-6). 45:5b To Baruch’s credit, Baruch ended up taking Jeremiah’s message to heart, and because he did, God promised him the greatest gift of all –his life . 46:2a Carchemish was a Hittite city located on the Euphrates River in Northern Syria. 46:2b Written right after Babylon defeated ( smote ) the Egyptian/Assyrian coalition at Carchemish in 605 BC, verses 1-12 outline (in poetic song) Nebuchadnezzar’s victory over Pharaoh Necho.
