JEREMIAH 19:4

JEREMIAH 20:1

1174

4 Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents; 5 They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, 1 which I com- manded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind: 6 2 Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that this place shall no more be called Tophet, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of slaughter. P 7 2 And I will make void the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem in this place; and I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, and by the hands of them that seek their lives: and their carcases will I give to be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth. P 8 2 And I will make this city desolate, and an hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished and hiss because of all the plagues thereof. 9 2 And I will cause them to eat the 3 flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall 4 eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them. P 10 2 Then shalt thou break the 5 bottle in the sight of the men that go with thee, P 11 And shalt say unto them, Thus saith the LORD OF HOSTS ; 2 Even so will I

break this people and this city, as one brea- keth a potter’s vessel, that cannot be made whole again: and they shall bury them in Tophet, till there be no place to bury. P 12 2 Thus will I do unto this place, saith the LORD, and to the inhabitants thereof, and even make this city as Tophet: 13 2 And the 6 houses of Jerusalem, and the houses of the kings of Judah, shall be defiled as the place of Tophet, because of all the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense unto all the host of heaven, and have poured out drink offerings unto other gods. P 14 Then came Jeremiah from Topet, whither the LORD had sent him to proph- esy; and he stood in the court of the LORD’S house; and said to all the people, 15 Thus saith the LORDOF HOSTS , the God of Israel; 2 Behold, I will bring upon this city and upon all her towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have hardened their necks, that they might not hear my words. 19:4 God’s people fail because they forsake God for other gods . The three great gods of America are: 1. The god of amusement (Hollywood, sports, and reality shows) 2. The god of materialism ( Isa 5:23 ) 3. The god of intellectualism 19:10 The smashed jar ( bottle ) indicated that it was over for the Judean kingdom 20:1 There are four men named Pashur in the Bible. Three of these men lived during Jeremiah’s time and were responsible for placing Jeremiah in stocks: 1. Pashur, the son of Immer (Jere 20:1) 2. Pashur, the son of Melchiah (Jere 21:1 & 38:1 and Neh 11:12) 3. Pashur, the father of Gedaliah (Jere 38:1) The 4th man lived during Ezra’s time (Ezra 2:38 & 10:22 and Neh 7:41 & 10:1-3) and was one of twenty-one priests who sealed the covenant with God after the Exile. NOTE –The name Pashur means “cleaver; to split asunder; to crack apart.” It was a common name apparently. Interestingly enough, God changed Pashur’s name here to “Magor-missabib” (meaning “terror on every side” – vs 4). God changed his name to that which defined his life. In fact, God takes the naming (or renaming) of people very seriously. Take the name Adam as an example. His name means “red (as in clay); of the ground (representing humanity).” Why did God call him Adam ? He was called Adam because he was taken from the ground (a name that defined his life). Thus, the naming (or renaming) of people is very important to God. Again, take as an example the first ten names of the generations of Adam. Did you know that God placed the entire story of the human race and His desire to redeem it within those first ten names ( Gen 5:1b ) ? It’s true: Whenever God names (or renames) a person, it is for a reason (Gen 17:1-5,15-16 & 32:27-28 and Acts 13:9 ); and that name according to the Scriptures will stick with that person throughout eternity ( Rev 2:17c ). Question: What will be the reason for your new name?
