JEREMIAH 7:7

JEREMIAH 7:21

1153

7 Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I 5 gave to your fathers, for ever and ever. 8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit. 9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not; 10 And come and stand before me in this house, which is called by my name, and say, We are delivered to do all these abominations? 11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a 1 den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD. 12 But go ye now unto my place which was in Shiloh, where I set my name at the first, and see what I did to it 2 for the wickedness of my people Israel. 13 And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up early and speaking, but ye heard not; and I 3 called you, but ye answered not; The promise to destroy the Temple (Fulfilled - II Ki 25:9 - 586 BC) 14 4 Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to

you and to your fathers, 5 as I have done to Shiloh. P The promise of Judah and Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon (Fulfilled - II Ki 25 - 586 BC) 15 6 And I will cast you out of my sight, 7 as I have cast out all your brethren, even 8 the whole seed of Ephraim. P 16 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer for them, neither make intercession to me: for I will not hear thee. 17 Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger. 19 Do they provoke me to anger? saith the LORD: do they not provoke themselves to the confusion of their own faces? 20 Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; 6 Behold, 9 mine anger and my fury shall be poured out upon this place, upon man, and upon beast, and upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched. P 21 Thus saith the LORD OF HOSTS , the God of Israel; Put your burnt offerings

7:7 There are two kinds of covenants (promises) into which God entered with the nation of Israel: 1. conditional ( Then will I cause you to dwell in this place ) 2. unconditional ( in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever )

Except for the Mosaic Covenant (Exo 19:5), which was conditional (temporal), all the rest of Israel’s covenants are unconditional (eternal): The Abrahamic Covenant (Gen 12:1-3), The Palestinian Covenant (Deut 30:1-10), The Davidic Covenant (II Sam 7:12- 16), and The New Covenant (Jere 31:31-37). These covenants are called “eternal” because they depend solely upon the integrity of God for their fulfillment. NOTE – God was reminding Israel here that she was given the land unconditionally due to the promise He made to Abraham (Gen 12). Like so many inheritances, just because it’s yours doesn’t mean it’s yours to enjoy. National security depends on moral reform, not more rituals. 7:10 The Lord did not save us ( We are delivered ) so that we could live anyway we wanted to ( to do all these abominations ). That kind of thinking is contrary to everything salvation stands for. Salvation (deliverance) is a three-part process (justification, sanctification and glorification – Rom 13:11 ), not a one-part method of action. NOTE –The first thing we’re taught to do as new believers is to stay under the influence of the Word of God and learn to obey what we know to be true (vs 22 - 23 and Exo 19:1-5). Sadly, the first thing we are meant to do often becomes the last thing we end up doing. Thus judgment awaits us because we fail to do the first thing (Jere 6:10-11). The very first thing a new believer is commanded to do is to search the Scriptures and find things in the Word to obey ( Jn 8: 30- 31 ). 7:12 Shiloh had been chosen for the center of worship after the conquest of Canaan (Josh 18:1). However, because of the wickedness of both people (Jud 18-21) and priest (I Sam 2:22), God removed it ( and see what I did to it ) and allowed it to fall into the hands of the Philistines (I Sam 4:1-11). As predicted by Jeremiah (vs 13-14), God would remove it again, allowing it this time to fall into the hands of the Babylonians (II Ki 25:8-10).. 7:16 The words “ pray not thou ” imply that a prayer of intercession was rising up in Jeremiah’s heart for the people. Warning: We must never allow what we think is right to supersede what God knows is right. If God thinks judgment is warranted, then who are we to question it, as if we might have a kinder more forgiving heart than God. 7:18 The “ queen of heaven ” here was none other than “Ishtar,” i.e., Ashtaroth/Astarte, a false goddess that the Zidonians worshipped (I Ki 11:5,33, II Ki 23:13 and Jere 44:17).
