Isaiah 31 Trust in the LORD , not Egypt! (Note - This portion of Isaiah’s prophecy took place in the 23rd year of King Hezekiah’s reign) Date Written - 704 BC/AM 3296
1 1 Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and 2 stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the HOLY 3 O N E of Israel, neither seek the LORD! 2 Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity. 3 Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together. 4 For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the 4 lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: 5 so shall the LORD OF HOSTS come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof. P 5 As birds flying, 5 so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it. P 6 Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted. 7 5 For in that day every man shall 6 cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin. P 8 5 Then shall the Assyrian fall with the
31:1 The true strength of a nation lay in its spiritual greatness (in its seeking of the HOLY O N E of Israel - Psa 33:12), not in its material greatness. An alliance with Egypt (and its material greatness) would prove to be fatal both to Judah (he that is holpen – vs 3) and Egypt ( he that helpeth – vs 3). NOTE – To misunderstand the Trinity (the Holy O N E ) is to misunderstand “who God is” ( Gen 26:5 – point #1). 31:5 This word ( passing over ) comes from the same Hebrew word as “Passover” (Exo 12). If Judah would trust God the same way Moses did, and stand up to the world (Egypt), not stand with it, then God would miraculously deliver Judah like He did Moses and the Israelites (Exo 14:21-31 – 1487 BC). 31:6 Northern Israel ( the children of Israel ) rebelled against the Lord for years (Hos 1:1-7 and Amos 2:6-8) and eventually fell to the Assyrians in 721 BC (II Ki 17:6 & 18:10-11). 32:1 There is only one king that “ shall reign in righteousness ,” JESUS CHRIST Himself (Isa 59:16-17, Psa 22:27-31 and Rom 3:20- 26 & 5:19 & 10:1-4 & II Cor 5:21), for no such description sufficiently or correctly fits even the best of Judah’s kings. NOTE – According to Genesis 3:21 , mankind is not only naked before God (Heb 4:13), but he is filthy as well ( Zech 3:3,4 ), and is in need of clothes and cleansing. Sinners who recognize their nakedness and filthiness before a holy God and turn to CHRIST for salvation will be clothed with “ HIS righteousness” ( Isa 61:10 and Mt 22:11 ). 32:5 The graciousness ( liberal usage of money in order to bribe people) of a vile person is wicked (Prov 17:23), and though it may cause the wicked to prosper temporarily (Prov 17:8), in the end, it is sure to destroy him (Eccl 7:7).
