23:1 Of all the Mediterranean coastal Phoenician cities, Tyre was the most flourishing. She was also the most proud (vs 9 and Ezk 28:1-10). Tyre was literally the “queen” of ports when it came to world commerce, and she knew it. Known for her purple dye that she extracted from sea snails, Tyre controlled Mediterranean commerce with enormous influence. And though the Assyrians dominated Tyre for a while during Hezekiah’s day, she would eventually break free of her captors and develop more pride as a city. This, of course, led to her downfall. Proverbs 8:13 says, “ Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall .” Nothing hangs a person quicker than pride (Esther 3:1 & 5:11 & 6:6 & 7:10 and Dan 4:28-33). The key to avoiding pride is to practice humility ( I Ki 21: 19- 29 ). God loves when humanity practices humility… even if it’s only for a moment. According to Proverbs 6:16-17, God hates pride. Pride defined is nothing more than a conceited sense of one’s own superiority. It’s the attitude, “I will do what I think is best for me.” Because of the peril of pride, God urges us not to take ourselves too seriously or to think of ourselves too highly (Rom 12:3), and begs us to learn the importance of practicing humility.
