stranger, which is not of thy seed. 13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circum- cised, that soul shall be 16 cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. God changes Sarai’s name to Sarah 15 And God said unto Abraham, As for 17 Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but 18 Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, 19 and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; 8 kings of people 9 shall be of her. PP P 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and 20 laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! 19 And God said, Sarah thy wife 19 shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an 11 everlast- ing covenant, and with his 10 SEED after him. PP P The promise of Ishmael to 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, 21 and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceed- ingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 23 And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; 17:6 Abraham fathered three different nations : (1) Arab Nation (Gen 16:10,12 & 17:20); (2) Edom Nation (Gen 25:23 & 36:1-43); (3) Israeli Nation (Gen 25:23). NOTE - God did not promise to bless the “religious movements” of these nations - Judaism (c. 1400 BC) and Islam (c. AD 622); God only promised to bless the “people” of these nations. To this day, the nations to which God promised “greatness” are still in existence and prospering: Israel (Gen 12:1-2) and the Arabs (Gen 21:18). 17:12 “Circumcision” was not only a mark of separation for an Israelite, but it was also a picture of the new nature that every believer would receive upon salvation (Colo 2:11, Deut 30:6 and Jere 4:4). Like baptism, circumcision is but a picture of something. NOTE - Neither “rite” can save a person spiritually (Gal 5:2-6 & 6:15).
