14:25 Isaiah now turns his attention to Assyria, the world power of his day. God promises to break Assyria (the paddle He is using to spank Israel with), and warns Israel’s neighbor (Palestina) not to rejoice against Israel (vs 29) once the paddle has been broken, for a bigger paddle (Babylon) is coming to take its place…and it’s sure to swing their way. 15:1 a The inhabitants of Moab (modern-day Jordan) came from Lot’s incest with one of his daughters (Gen 19:29-37). Like Edom, which came from the descendants of Esau (Gen 36:1), Moab and Ammon (Gen 19:38) were a part of Abraham’s family and thus kin to Israel. No wonder Isaiah wept over the fate of Moab ( vs 5 ). It always hurts more whenever it hurts family. The conception of Moab and the burden of its end were due to the self-regarding choices of one man (Gen 13:1-12 & 19:17-23). Lot’s legacy, Moab and Ammon, was destined to provide the worst carnal seduction in the history of Israel (Balaam’s evil counsel which culminated in Moab at Baal-poer, named after Baal, the local heathen god worshipped at Peor – Num 25:1-3) and the cruelest religious perversion ever presented to Israel (the sacrificing of babies to Molech, the god of the Ammonites – Lev 18:21 and I Ki 11:4-7). Warning! The self-centered decisions you make today will come back to haunt your descendants tomorrow. 15:1 b Moab was laid waste by 3 different Assyrian kings: Tiglath-Pileser (732 BC), Sargon (711 BC), and Sennacherib (701 BC).
