9 THE CORPORATE SPIRITUAL SONG

The sound of the corporate spiritual song in heaven is intense, powerful and harmonious. Its counterpart should be heard in the gatherings of the believers on earth. This corporate ‘sea of sound’ is the constant backdrop of heaven, the atmosphere in which God, the angels and redeemed humanity live forever. To touch this sound of voices and instruments raised on simple chords of praise is to touch eternity. There is a place for psalm and hymns, words that are sung together in melody, harmony and rhythm. Then there is the corporate spiritual ‘song of the Lord’ where the believers express their own praise, gratitude and love in a free form of song. Voices are singing, instruments playing flowing in the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Revelation is filled with this timeless expression of worship. ‘Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices shouting in heaven; “The world has now become the Kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ…”’ (Rev 11:15) The trumpet is an instrument of alarm, warfare, announcing and giving direction for the people of God.
