The Spiritual Song - Exploring Prophetic Worship by Mike Herron

8 SING WITH THE SPIRIT

Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church concerning the use of tongues and prophecy in a public meeting provides important insights into the operation of the ‘spiritual song.’ The spontaneous song falls within the category of ‘prophecy’ and must meet the criteria offered here. All the spiritual gifts, including the song of the Lord, must manifest love, build up the church, be intelligible and be a representation of the God of order and peace. ‘Let love be your hightest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives – especially the ability to prophesy (with music and song!) .’ (14:1) Musical prophecy falls into the category of the ‘greater charismata’, the Holy Spirit gifts that have more ability to bu ild up God’s people. As a singer/musician we are to set our hearts on having this gift and pursue it with deep committment. ‘But one who prophesies (with music and song) strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.’ (14:3) The gift of musical prophecy helps to construct or build up ( oikodomē )], the house of God bringing comfort and consolation to the hearer. These spiritual fruits are the ultimate tests of the song of the Lord; is the song inspiring faith and trust in the believers?
