3 BEGINNINGS OF THE SPIRITUAL SONG
The Song of Moses- Exodus 15
‘Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord: “ I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; he has hurled both horse and rider into the sea. ” (Exodus 15:1) There was no song to express the Israelite’s joy at Pharaoh’s defeat so Moses sang the first prophetic song in history! It was so powerful in its prophetic nature that it propelled the people of God in the spirit of triumph all the way to Revelation 15:2-4 where ‘ those who had been victorious over the beast…were singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and song of the Lamb:’ The song was so infused with the Holy Spirit’s victory that David quoted it centuries later in his own song in Psalm 118:14 ‘The Lord is my strength and song; he has given me victory.’ Although the song was spontaneous, Moses incorporated the musical form he had learned in Egypt. It could have been a popular tune that was well known by all the people and Moses merely inserted new words. There were three strophes (sections using the same music for successive verses of the song) of which the first two end in God’s enemies sinking in the deep waters.
