And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous — to make ready a people prepared for the Lord”(Luke 1:17) .

The NIV translation of this passage allows for the word fathers

to be translated as parents. These righteous spiritual parents,

under the anointing of the Elijah spirit, will restore the

unrighteous or backslidden children of God back to living

righteous lives. We can see then this prophecy is not just talking

about physical families but spiritual children.

At the heart of the Elijah visitation will be the work of “spiritual

parenting.” As I have mentioned earlier in the book there was

an absence of spiritual fathers in the Jesus Movement. There

were some spiritual fathers in the movement but most of that

movement was left to live and die on its own. What would have

happened if the church had had spiritual fathers and mothers

who believed in this amazing movement and embraced those

young converted hippies? We will never know, but neither will

God let that happen again.

One of the saddest realizations for me is how badly the church

has lived out the revelation of the fatherhood of God over the

centuries. There have been brighter moments in church history

of correctly revealing the Father God’s heart. But far too many

of Father God’s people have distorted the picture of God which
