The Life of Christ
His brothers as yet did not believe on Him, as also confirmed in verse 5.
• Ps. 69:8 reads, "I am become a stranger unto My brethren, and an alien unto My mother's children."
• His brothers’ names were James, Joses, Simon, and Judas (Mt. 13:55).
• James would later pastor the Jerusalem church and write the Epistle by the same name.
Judas wrote the book of Jude.
•
Jn. 7:4 “For no one does anything in secret, when he himself seeks to be known publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.”
By saying, “If you do these things (miracles), show Yourself to the world,” or, in other words, “be up front about it.”
• From verse 5, it appears that they said these things skeptically.
• They didn’t really believe in His miracles, but rather than confess their unbelief, they spoke cynically — “If you are the Son of God, show yourself in Jerusalem!”
Jn. 7:6 For not even His brothers were believing in Him. Jesus therefore said to them, “My time is not yet at hand, but your time is always opportune.”
“His hour” refers to His set date with Calvary.
• Jesus is locked in, whereas His brethren can come and go as they please; they are not as yet connected to the heavenly agenda.
Jn. 7:7-8 The world cannot hate you; but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil. 8 “Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”
By saying, “My time has not yet fully come,” infers that He has definitely entered the season of His hour; His crucifixion is soon approaching.
• The next feast He attends will be His last.
SECTION 131
Lk. 9:51 And it came about, when the days were approaching for His ascension, that He resolutely set His face to go to Jerusalem;
This verse marks the turning point in Jesus’ ministry; He now begins His emotional ascent to the cross.
• Jesus may have come to a fork in the road; one way led back to Galilee while the other led to Jerusalem.
This was His moment of decision.
•
• There were two completely different outcomes depending upon which direction He chose to go.
