The Life of Christ

Jn. 6:30 They said therefore to Him, “What then do You do for a sign, that we may see, and believe You? What work do You perform?”

In verse 29 Jesus has just given this serious discourse on faith, and the next thing the people do is ask for another sign.

• It is as though they are saying, “If you want us to believe who you say you are, w e’re going to require many more miracles.”

Jn. 6:31-34 “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.’” 32 Jesus therefore said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. 33 “For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said therefore to Him, “Lord, evermore give us this bread.”

As Jesus continued speaking, it seemed that faith slowly developed in their hearts.

• They were even calling Him "Lord," and not just "Rabbi," as earlier in vs. 25.

• They are also asking Him for the bread of life, rather than just natural bread.

Jn. 6:35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”

Jesus said, “I am the Bread of life.”

• The manna eaten in the wilderness was not the “Bread of life.”

• All those who ate the manna had since died, and their carcasses had fallen in the wilderness.

Jn. 6:36-42 “But I said to you, that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. 37 “All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out. 38 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 “And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing but raise it up on the last day. 40 “For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him, may have eternal life; and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” The Jews therefore were grumbling about Him, because He said, “I am the bread that came down out of heaven.” 42 And they were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does He now say, ‘I have come down out of heaven’ ? ”

Just as they are delicately starting to believe, others speak up, most likely Jews sent to remind everybody that Jesus is still the son of Joseph; their faith suddenly collapses.

• The same occurrence has happened twice already in Nazareth.
