The Life of Christ
LESSON 10
SECTION 104
Mk. 6:30-33 And the apostles gathered together with Jesus; and they reported to Him all that they had done and taught. 31 And He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest a while.” (For there were many people coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.) 32 And they went away in the boat to a lonely place by themselves.
This is a rare occurrence in the Gospels where anything is mentioned about taking a well-needed rest, but it ended up being anything but a vacation.
• The only other season of rest happens later when Jesus goes into Tyre and Sidon where He reluctantly ended up casting a demon out of a Gentile’s daughter (Mt.15).
• Here in Mk. 6, before long there were 5000 men, in addition to women and children, who decided to vacation with them (Mt.14:21).
Mk. 6:33-34 And the people saw them going, and many recognized them, and they ran there together on foot from all the cities and got there ahead of them. 34 And when He went ashore, He saw a great multitude, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
Rather than be upset and feel infringed upon, as we imagine some of the disciples might have felt, Jesus responded to these people very warmly.
• Jesus was a realist; He knew these people weren’t going away, and so the right thing to do was to “make the best of it.”
He had compassion upon them.
•
• When things don’t always turn out as we think we deserve, let’s remember how Jesus responded; rather than sulk or become short, He embraced the situation with a heart full of love.
• He had everyone sit down and then began to teach.
Verse 34 says “they were people without a shepherd .”
• Even though they attended their local synagogue regularly, they didn’t feel that they had a pastor who could offer them workable solutions for their daily lives.
SECTION 105
Jn. 6:1-4 After these things Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberias). 2 And a great multitude was following Him, because they were seeing the signs which He was performing on those who were sick. 3 And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. 4 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand.
One of the ways we determine how long the ministry of Jesus lasted is by counting the Passovers throughout the Gospels.
• Number 1: The first Passover was when He cleansed the temple at the beginning of His ministry (Jn. 2:13).
