The Life of Christ

The one thing about Jesus’ yoke is that it’s not “one size fits all.”

• Each of us live under a differently fashioned yoke, one carefully form-fitted to our life and calling.

• And, as we wear and submit to that yoke, we find that it is not heavy since the majority of the weight falls upon Jesus.

• As we follow the leadings of Jesus, we can actually learn to rest in His leading. We also discover that His load is light.

• When our load becomes heavy, it is often because we have taken on things other than what He would have us carry.

• However, when we are carrying what we are called to bear, and when we follow His precise pace and direction, we will find glorious rest to our soul.

SECTION 77

Lk. 7:36 Now one of the Pharisees was requesting Him to dine with him. And He entered the Pharisee’s house, and reclined at the table.

The Eastern custom was to actually lie down at a low table to eat.

• The Mishnah described this posture as “sitting down and leaning.”

• The body rested on the couch, the feet were turned away from the table in the direction of the wall, while the left elbow rested on the table.

Lk. 7:37 And behold, there was a woman in the city who was a sinner; and when she learned that He was reclining at the table in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster vial of perfume,

How she entered we are unsure; perhaps there was a large gathering and she mingled her way in; perhaps, she just entered directly — it doesn’t matter.

• She may have heard Jesus speak earlier that day, and moved by what He said, followed Him to this location.

• It didn’t matter to her who was there or what they thought; she had come only to learn of Him and find rest for her soul.

• She had brought with her an alabaster flask of perfume.

• She was described as a “sinner,” meaning she was a prostitute.

Lk. 7:38 “…and standing behind Him at His feet, weeping, she began to wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet, and anointing them with the perfume.”

As she stood behind Him at His feet, a shower of tears fell upon His feet.

• As if surprised, or afraid to defile Him by her tears, she quickly wiped them with the long tresses of her hair.
