I t was 1:00 on a Sunday morning, Bobby Chance and I were sitting in the Beef Bowl restaurant on the corner of Vine and Santa Monica Boulevard in Hollywood, and I was struggling to fathom the scene before me. There, huddled together out of the cold, was more weirdness than I had ever seen in my life. This large guy in a neon green dress with gaudy pink stockings walked by me, sat down and casually began sipping his coffee. At a table opposite, a guy in a peasant dress with sparkles by his eyes talked with a carefully groomed boy in tight pants and a chubby girl with leotards and stiff, bleached hair. Outside, scattered along the sidewalk near the corner, the night people pushed each other and whirled and laughed and conducted business. Two girls, hovering near a bus stop, flashed open their jackets at passing cars. A group tittered and nodded to each other in the direction of an approaching Rolls Royce. A single guy driving, a good sign. As the car eased up to the light, one of the girls flounced brazenly up to the door. The guy opened it. The girl stuck her head eagerly in, then disappeared inside. One of her friends, a short girl with jet black hair, struck her hands together, clenched her fists, and laughed sharply at the sight. Victory.
