Love is maturing when it begins to reach the point of sacrificial devotion for another. The Scriptures tell us:

“Greater love has no one than this… than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13)

The Bible defines this as proof of God’s love for us:

“But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

The laying down of one’s life for another for Jesus is not meant just to be understood as physical death only. It is equally proportionate in coming to the place of the death of our own self-will in exchange for the will and life of God. That is how the phrase becoming laid down lovers of Jesus was first coined. We come to the place of our own death, surrender and abandonment (and all of its ambitions and desires) unto obedience and devotion to God – in that Holy exchange for His! Where did Jesus face the ultimate display of the confrontation between His will and the will of His Father? In the Garden of Gethsemane! The place of pressing !

“Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from Me: nevertheless, not my will, but Thine, be done.” (Luke 22:42)
