remnant of believing Jews had not forsaken their loyalty to the

one true God. Paul asserts that this was true even at that time

… that God had preserved a remnant of Israel who had received

their Messiah in Jesus Christ.

1) This remnant is described as the “elected by grace” … those

who God had chosen not because of their works but by grace

alone (those he saw in eternity who would receive Jesus).

2) Paul lays out how God has in every generation pre-determined

how he will in mercy bring many to faith in Jesus Christ, even

when it looks like so few are responding or even interested.

Vs. 5

Rom 11:6 But if by grace, then it is no more of works; otherwise, grace is no more grace. But if it is of works, then it is no more of grace; otherwise, work is no more work. Rom 11:7 What then? Israel has not obtained that which it seeks, but the election obtained it, and the rest were hardened Rom 11:8 even as it is written, "God gave to them a spirit of slumber, eyes not seeing, and ears not hearing" until this day. Rom 11:9 And David said, "Let their table become for a snare and a trap and a stumbling block and a recompense to them. Rom 11:10 Let their eyes be darkened so that they may not see, and their back always bowing."

d. Paul explains why those chosen by God (elected) had obtained

this great salvation and why Israel who had been diligently

seeking for it was blind to it.

1) Paul returns briefly to the theme that our salvation is based

totally on grace (free, unearned) and not by works (nothing

we can do to deserve His salvation). We are saved totally

by God’s decision from eternity in receiving his salvation through

His mercy alone. Vs.6

2) Paul quotes Isa.29:19 and Deut.29:4… in which God predicts

that Israel will come to a time of “spiritual slumber” … unable
