ROMANS Study Guide

(1) We have discussed the Law of Sin (consistently at war

with the spiritual things of God) but here we find

another consis tency in Paul…

# his delight (rejoicing) in the Law (the will and word of

God)

# “after the inward man” … Paul describes a “heart after

God” but it is weak in dealing with sin. Jesus said it

this way in Matt.26:41) - “the spirit (inward man) is

willing but the flesh (the self- life) is weak.”

(2) Paul consistently had this heart to please the Lord and

do the right thing… this was a law or consistent truth in

Paul’s life.

(b) But his new inner man… his new nature (2Cor.5:17) was no

match for the Law of Sin…” he was constantly being brought

into captivity” vs.23

(1) Again, Paul is describing a believer who is trying to use

his best efforts, his best ability and his best

understanding to please and serve the Lord… this

always brings a believer under the Law.

# Reaching into yourself… is reaching into your soulish

man (the carnal man… our will power, our reasoning

and our emotions).

# Flesh always comes unde r the law… remember, the

Law is death to the natural man trying to live out of his

own will and strength.
