ROMANS Study Guide

release from the Law.

1) Law has “dominion” ( power, rule) over every living

Person. Everyone must come under God’s rule. Vs.1

2) Married to Mr. “L” (law)

a) The perfect husband who demands a perfect wife

b) We are the imperfect wife…never able to satisfy or live up

to Mr.” L’s” requirements.

3) The only escape from this marriage is death! Death frees the

dead partner from any further obligation to the marriage.

Vss.2-3

Rom 7:4 So, my brothers, you also have become dead to the law by the body of Christ so that you should be married to Another, even to Him raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit to God. Rom 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the passions of sin worked in our members through the law to bring forth fruit to death. Rom 7:6 But now we having been set free from the Law, having died to that in which we were held, so that we serve in newness of spirit and not in oldness of the letter.

b. Paul declares that we are now made dead to the law by “being in

the body of Christ” (Sharing in his crucifixion - Rom.6:3-6)

vss.4-6

1) We are now free to be married to the resurrected Christ…

we can now bear spiritual fruit (life) through our relationship

with Christ Jesus.

2) Paul in vs. 5 refers back to both our pre-Christian and post

Christian experience when we are living under the Law or

looking to the Law for our justification…

a) the sinful “motions or passions” are revealed by the law…

Paul is not saying the Law caused our sinfu l passions… he is

saying the Law exposed our inner desire and wanting to sin.

It is interesting that the Law not only shows what sin is…

but it also reveals our desire to sin.
