I Appeal To Caesar!
Caiaphas knows, of course, what Saul would not do: go on such a strenuous crusade just because Jesus did not wash his hands before eating! Such thoughts sidetrack the main discussion! This argument must be like the head of a spear, sharp and unyielding, a reason beyond challenge, one that every Jewish person can understand! Saul is a Pharisee indeed, he believes himself to be an honest, genuine believer in the Scripture and all that Judaism stands for. Now in his thirties, Saul is inexperienced in some ways, is extremely mature in others. As a leading expert of the Torah, no other person is as qualified in this department: Saul has both total devotion to Scripture, as well as an encyclopedic grasp of it. This scholar cannot be compelled to insult or harm any Jew without justification. The cause of the Purge must be honorable by Torah standards if the leading Torah expert is expected to participate, even lead it! Now . . . Caiaphas must uncover that final cinch, a definitive statement that stands, immovable as Mt. Sinai. Such an approach will ensure the Sanhedrin’s approval. A fresh question flashes in Caiaphas’ mind! A striking question that surely has an answer! “What is the hardest thing in Jesus’ teaching for a Torah expert to accept?” If that answer is strong enough to be obnoxious to Judaism, and proven to be part of Jesus’ key teachings, it will mean the destruction of the Jesus People Movement!
